New puppy with diarhea Our puppy we have only had for 1 week has had diarhea. We took him to the vet who said normally they would fast a dog for 24 hours to get rid of diarhea only they could not do that with a puppy as small as mine 1lb 2oz. They injected him with IV fluids and gave him medicine and keopectate. He also was no longer eating his food. I was giving him nutrical. After 2 days he no longer has diarhea and is eating regularly again. I am writing because there are alot of new puppy owners on here right now and I have learned a tough lesson. The vet said he had most likely injested something. I was allowing Chachi to roam our house alittle bit and he probably injested food which was dropped on the floor from my daughter. We have swept our floors, bought Chachi a cage/crate. He now is given hours of rest time. We only bring him out for 15 minute intervals for soft play time. My vet says these yorkie puppies are like glass. They have much more resilents when they start reaching the 2Lb mark. This has been a scary experience. If he would have gotten any worse or did not improve he would have been going to 24 hour care animal hospital. Since I have joined this forum I have been just reading all the posts to see if anyone else had this experience. I am just happy he is getting better but I hope all new owners see this and take heed. |
That is wonderful that your little Chachi had a happy ending to his problem. You are very lucky and in correct that a 1.2 pound Yorkie is extreamly fragile and delicate, especially when there are health issues as diarrhea present. I have found it very common for Yorkie pups to get diarrhea very easily. I just wanted to type a little bit about it for any new Yorkie pup Mom's and Dad's that might be having the same issue with their pup. Diarrhea can result from overexcitement or nervousness, a change in diet or water, sensitivity to certain foods, overeating, intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, or ingestion of toxic substances. Bloody or black diarrhea that lasts for more than a day requires veterinary attention. Less severe diarrhea can be treated at home by offering a bland diet consisting of rice, tapioca, or cooked macaroni, along with cottage cheese or tofu for protein, and should be given for several days. The intestinal tract needs time off in order to heal. A young pup also can become quickly dehydrated with diarrhea so I feel it is best to keep close contact with your vet if your pup is very young or small. |
I'm glad to hear it is common for puppies to get diarhea. That Chachi was not eating is why I believe they gave him the IV fluid. I was so afraid because it does seem like puppies could get diarhea very easily and what if it happened again??? The vet said it could have also have been from his change in diet. I was questioning if we really should have gotten a puppy this small. Although I did not buy Chachi for his smallness. He is a really active puppy for such a small size and has a tendency to look for anything to get into. I am just glad he is better. |
I'm experiencing a similar problem, too. We just brought Frankie (8 weeks, about 1 lb.) home the other day. For all of his meals except one, he kind of just picked at his food and didn't eat too much (maybe a couple teaspoons). One meal, he did eat rather heartily. Last night, when he went to the bathroom, he did have a bit of solid stool and brown/green diarrhea (sorry to be so graphic!). Should I be worried? |
I called the vet after he had the diarhea for 2 days. (It was yellow water) He was not eating anything and I was very concerned. This is my first yorkie. The vet said diarhea is common but because of their smallness/youngness is something to be concerned about and needs close attention. My breeder wasn't concerned and said to feed him cottage cheese for the diahrea. The vet said he wants NO Changes in his diet that can disrupt his system further. I would call your vet. These little puppies are so fragile that I believe the vet should at least know about it especially if he is not eating. Make sure you are giving him nutrical so he does not crash on you. My Chachi is better now and I am relieved. I also found out my dog is younger than I thought (8Wks) When you think of it they are barely weened and they are dealing with the stress of change. My vet said the 3 weeks after a new pet owner takes these Yorkies is a very fragile time and told me not to allow any child holding, not to have the puppy around any other people, and of course no other dogs. It could be just the stress from the change that is affecting your new puppy. My poor Chachi would cry all night in his little carrier untill my husband bought him a playyard. I wonder if he wasn't stressed from the exhaustion of crying all night. Anyway I hope your puppy gets better soon. I know how you must be feeling. |
Update on Chachi. He is much better only now he is constipated and has killer gas. The poor thing bows down like hes gotta go every 15 minutes!!! I wish I would have given him the macaroni Schatzie suggested!!!!! |
Oh poor little Chachi, he sure is having a rough time with all this huh? :( Maybe a call to the vet might be in order for the little guy, just to make sure and get him checked over if needed. keep us posted on him. |
