Sudden Allergies?
 
My Moka who is almost 3 yrs old, is suddenly itching and uncomfortable. The only thing different I have done recently was switch her food about a month ago from TOTW to Wellness small dog. The itching started 2 days ago. She has no apparent redness, or hives on her skin but she is visibly uncomfortable and not in any one particular spot-but all over. She does not have any fleas or signs of fleas, and the pads on her feet are not red or pinkish in color. Wednesday I did give her her sentinel heartworm but I do this monthly. My house is dry even though we are running a humidifier. Could she just have dry skin? Or, could it be her new food? She has itched enough under her jaw to just start irritating the skin, but when you pet her she just wants you to scratch her all over. Allergies have never been a problem for her but I know they can surface at any time. What can I try putting on her skin or giving her to give her some comfort? She is due for a routine wellness check, but until then???

It might be the food try changing her back and see if she better, have you bath her in anything different then you usually do. you might try a mediciated shampoo or a oatmeal base shampoo. I am now using micro-tek shampoo it has work well for me heres a link

it is the food go back to the previous food as it takes time to buid up in system then they start itching - been dealing with allergies for 5 1/2 years so this sounds like food triggered it if that was the only change

oatmeal is very drying and it also is not good for allergy dogs as it is a grain hypoallergenic is best for allergy dogs

I always thought oatmeal smooth the skin, thanks I learned something new.

the med shampoo has work well for me what do you use?

nah learned the hard way as on allergy group and many dogs cannot tolerate the oatmeal as it is a grain so makes them more itchy.

I like dr bronners mild unscented baby shampoo and blue hypoallergenic, earthbath hypoallergenic or clear

also vet shampoo i like duoxo chlorhexedine for staph infection and to keep bacteria down in skin

my girl reacts horribly to shampoos it is very sad and those she does not react to

Ok I am going to the big city this afternoon so I can pick up what ever I need to help her. Poor thing kept me awake last night scratching herself I felt so bad for her, that I got up in the middle of the night and gave her half a benedryl tablet. It helped instantly! so I know I am dealing with some sort of an allergy. I can also switch her food back, but the TOTW has that ingredient in it that everyone says is bad. She is not a picky eater, and does not have a sensitive stomach. This is the first time we have ever had an allergy reaction.

She has not had a bath in weeks. She is mat free and a rather naturally clean dog and I always worry about too much bathing drying out their skin anyways especially in the winter. So, what about leave in conditioners to help her too?

do not confuse too many things so do not do the conditioner get back on previous food and give it some time if she stops itching it was the food and you can look for another food later just get her comfortable - how much does your baby weigh as 1/2 benedryl 25mg is a lot the dose is 1mg per 1 pound

if she doing good on todw I would put her back on that. you might try a food with fish some says that help, as far as shampoo and conditioner goes if I am not using the med shampoo, I use Isle of dogs shampoo and conditioner right now.

Good point! She weighs about 10 maybe 11 lbs, so I think I was ok on the dosage by your conversion. I admit, I was desperate as I felt so bad for her. I did give her the smaller sized half too, but I was nervous about it. She is still doing fine, not sleeping more than normal or anything, and actually still has not been itching near as much this morning. I gave it to her at 5 a.m. Why did it take this new dog food so long to affect her like this? I even took 7 days to switch her over, and she was fully switched over around the middle of Dec.

Ichabob: The TOTW food I had her on was the pacific stream formula so it did have fish in it. I guess I will switch her back to that as I didn't even have a good reason for the change. I just kept reading that Wellness was better.

yeah my allergy dog got hives from simplicef but it took 17 days before she broke out as it has to build up in system sometimes for the reaction to happen then it gets overloaded and you start to see the symptoms
