Aftercare from being spayed I have learned a lot from reading the post about the spaying process and that I need to ask for blood work to be done...not to just assume the vet will do it. My question is this, my vet would like Bella to stay overnight due to her size. She weighs 2.5 lbs at 9 months. Is the overnight stay normal? The mommee in me says that she would be more comfortable at home with me but I am unsure. The vet said she would let her go home but someone had to be with her all the time for the first 24 hours. Plus, she would have strict guidelines for me to follow. I had planned on taking time off to watch over her. My vet is experienced with Yorkies and told me that Bella is the smallest one she has cared for. She is also a Yorkie mom too. I trust her and Bella loves her:p:p. After reading what can go wrong I am unsure what to do. Anyone run into this before? Thanks for everyones help! |

She will need help standing up to pee/poop and at the vets she might end up messing on herself because she can't get up. Layla had to be hand fed for a few days (the anesthesia does a number on her and she is out of it for days). In MY opinion, being at the vets will only cause her more stress. Tell your vet you will follow the guidelines but you want her home with you where you can watch her and keep her comfortable. Also- Layla was the same size when she was spayed- and there are many on here who have had them spayed even smaller. |
My son is a vet tech and yes he says that is the norm that dogs have to stay overnight, My Prada was 6 pounds when she got spayed and she came home the same day because my son took it under his care but my other dog Relay had to stay overnight when he got neutered. I am sure your baby will be fine and they will take very good care of her, and I had a full blood panel done in my Prada before she was spayed, I did not do that for my Relay just a regular pre op blood test did it for him, since he is much bigger at 8 pounds and a mix, he is a yorkie Rusell. I know it is hard to leave her but if there are vets there 24 hrs than I think she would be better off there where they can monitor her vitals and God forbid if there were any complications, she would be right there. AT my vets they have a vets there 24 hrs bc it is an animal hospital. I have to have Pixie spayed in march and dread it but I know it has to be done. It is so hard leaving them but in some cases it is for the best. Only If there is a vet there round the clock! That is my opinion. |
You said that the vet was a Yorkie owner and I believe you trust your vet. I would let it stay overnight, I would feel better doing what the vet suggested. I don't know what I would be able to do if something happened during the night. |
Thank You Thank you all for your help. I will ask if there will be a vet or vet tech at the office with her. I will make my decision from there... I am thinking she will stay overnight.:) |
My puppy was neutered almost 2 weeks ago & he stayed overnight. It's supposed to be better so they can monitor him/her. He's not small, 13 lbs., so that's wasn't the issue. |
Since Bella is so small, I would say let her stay at the vets overnight if there is someone there to keep an eye on her. If not, she would do better home with you by her side. Never assume they will have someone in the office overnight. The first vet I had, offered overnight stays but then to my astonishment had no one there to watch over the animals. It seems silly to me to offer that option if you have no one to watch them. :( |
The vet I used to see required you to bring your animals in the night before the surgery to stay the night, alone! This was 1 reason we switched. I did not feel comfortable leaving Maddie there by herself. The vet we use now, allows them to come home same day with pain meds. I would not allow her to stay in the facility over night if she is going to be alone. |
