Kennel Cough My dog already had all of his vaccinations & he's current on them, but he was neutered last week & now I notice him coughing. He stayed at the vet's overnight so that they could observe him, but being around the other dogs he might have gotten sick. He had kennel cough when I first got him and was treated with an antibiotic & it went away. Then he had his booster shots. Is it possible to get kennel cough when he's already had his shots? |
He can still get Kennel Cough if he didnt have bortadella vaccine, I do believe it is offered as a shot and also a nasal spray, my puppy had the nasal spray, they just squirt it up thier nose;) If he didnt recieve the bortadella then it is possible that he did catch it as it is airborne. He could have caught it anywhere!! |
He's had his bordatella vaccination & booster, & is current on all vaccinations, but has had a weird hacking cough this week, not constant, but it reminds me of when he had kennel cough when we first got him. |
Bordatella isn't 100% effective so I think that's why a lot of people opt not to get it. You can still get kennel cough on the vaccine. My Jackson got kennel cough a few months back and it was treated with some antibiotics and went away in 2 days -- it probably is kennel cough. I hope you get it figured it out! Good luck! Oh- I wanted to add... sometimes the tube that they put down their throat when they neuter them can cause a reaction, too. But I don't know if that would take a week to show up. |

Thanks. I didn't know if you could still get kennel cough even with the vaccination. The tube would make sense too. |
I brought my yorkie to do basic grooming before she was fully vaccinated (I was so silly)!!! Ended up she has this kennel cough and I brought her to vet, vet gave some antibiotic and medicine, it actually took about 1 week for Sugar to stop coughing, but the vet also told me some kennel cough might drag to months to recover :( |
Kennel cough may be caused by different viral and bacterial strains. Some of these strains, such as the canine flu, do not have vaccinations. Therefore, due to the fact that there is more than one cause of kennel cough, it is possible for your dog to get kennel cough after having the illness and even after being vaccinated. The most common cause of kennel cough is a bacteria called Bordetella, which has vaccinations against. Immunity does not last long after the vaccination which is why dogs are given boosters which range over 6-12 month periods (and also is why just 1 or 2 vaccinations isn't enough). |
Yes, they can get kennel cough even with the vaccine. They can also get it from the vaccine. If he was intubated, that could have caused irritation, but I've never heard of it taking a week to start after surgery. |
