Bordetella? Is this normal? Hey everyone, i just wanted to get some advice from people with more experience about yorkies. i have two yorkies Gizmo and Lexie and everything with them has been great.On tuesday me and my husband decide to get them their bordetella because since he works in a doggie daycare we wanted to live them there for a couples of hrs(3 or 4) to get them used to being in doggie day care since we plan to travel. The vet informed me that they would probably have some coughing like if they had kennel cough bu that would go away in a couple days.Today i woke up because Gizmo was making a sound as though he couldn't breathe and i freaked out. i was ready to take him to the vet. I got up and put some water on his nose to see if that would help (he seemed like he was trying to cough or sneeze but something was blocking it) he gagged a couple times but never threw up and after a couple minutes he was back to normal.i dont know if this what the vet meant by him coughing but it was really scaring. Lexie hasn't been coughing or anything, she seems to be fine. is this normal? |
Yes, that's kennel cough. Using warm mist vaporizer will help or take him into a steam filled bath. |
When I rescued Trixie she had a bit of a cough. Like trying to clear her throat. But a few days later Bobby started symptoms too. He sounded like he couldn't breathe well. Like his nose was stuffed up and needed to be blown. Just like we sound when we are congested. He was also acting depressed. I took them both to the vet and They had kennel cough. the doc gave them antibiotics and both were ok in a week. I kept them away from other doggies for a month though just in case. |
Our yorkies had a lot of nasal irritation after their bordatella and the vet told us that was normal. Ours had the nasal swab or mist, I can't remember which, and the doctor told me that some swelling is normal. |
Did your pups recieve the nasal bordetella? I do believe that is a side effect of the nasal because it is a live vaccine. |
Both received the nasal one but only Gizmo has problems breathing, or sounds like hes congested. Lexie just started to sneeze. Is that normal? should i be concern or am i just am over protected mommy?:rolleyes: |
I would call the vet and see if the vet wants you to bring him in. You might be overreacting, but then again, you might not. We do have to be extra careful with these little ones. I think I would err on the side of being too careful. |
When we had the vet give our previous yorkie Baby the Bordetella I felt terrible because to me it was like watching her get waterboarded the way they put it in her nose and her struggling. She had the coughing and lethargic symptoms too afterwards. Unfortunately we thought it was necessary because we were going to have to board her. As it turned out we didn't board her because I would not leave her while she was having such a bad reaction. We ended up taking her with us to an out of town wedding. |
Yep. I agree. I would call the vet and just see what they have to say. When my pups recently got that vaccine, the doctor told me to call if they actually started experiencing symptoms. |
i know how u feel...i felt horrible when they got it..both of them were struggling and just wanted it to stop...the vet said next time they would it in by injection because they fought it.lolz especially my Little Lexie, she fought more than Gizmo who's 11.8 lbs and shes only 7.8lbs.lolz |

Just finished talking to the vet and she said it normal. Its the irratation and should go away in a couple of days...i am so relieved..Gizmo is back to normal barking at me:D .thank you all for all you advice.:thumbup: |

Sasha had the same problem but she still kind of has it. She had her bordatella last Saturday. How long did gizmo's symptoms last? |
Bordetella When I got Winston he had kennel cough. We got an antibiotic that cleared it up. When he got the Bordetella vaccination it was administered in his nose. He sneezed, stuff came flying out, and he kept on shaking his head as if he was trying to clear it. He made a hacking noise in the vet's, but did not show any kennel cough symptoms when we got him home. He also had other vaccinations that day, so he was lethargic and "out of it" that night, but didn't have the same kennel cough symptoms (looked and sounded like a cat hacking up a hair ball) that he had when we first got him. |
