Kidney Damage and Food Raw or Not? HELP I am so torn :( My Fred had what we presume was Leptosparosis this past summer and has suffered some kidney damage. His kidney number when we started was 129 in august, down to 68 in october after 2 rounds of antibiotics and down to 52 here about 2 weeks ago. He is currently on science diet k/d food. (sorry this is long lol) We dont know if it will go down any further or if it ever will. My sister has a greyhound with kidney damage and after she switched her to a raw diet she has done so much better. I guess my basic question is this, wouldnt raw food be hard on his kidneys? if not wont he start wanting to bite into people looking for blood i mean it would be raw meat we feed him? (i know that sounds dorky prolly but yeah) and if i were to switch him how do i go about doing it HELP!! |
There is a great post in the yorkshire library section on raw food diets with lots of links also just do a search on raw food diets there is a couple large post to read through with a lot of information. I believe the think is that the protein is easy digested in its raw form with less lose of nutrients. I would suggest receiving advice from a holistic vet or one that has some knowledge of a raw food diet. And no they won't eat your fingers |
Have you discussed this with your vet? Raw is generally only recommended for dogs with no health issues. I think it may be too high in protein for a dog with kidney disease. I think your vet should be the one to advise you on this. |
Here's a great site that dispels some of the myths you might find in this thread by people who maybe have not researched a raw diet: The Many Myths of Raw Feeding And by the way, a raw diet averages about 18% protein so not so high. Some people think because it's meat that means high protein. In reality a raw meat is not just protein ie water, fat etc.... Here are some good articles I found about kidney disease and a protein: Are high protein diets harmful to a dog's kidneys? Focusing On Protein - Nutrition Related - ThePetCenter.com - The Internet Animal Hospital I'd also encourage you to check out this site and perhaps post your question there... I bet there are many people on that site in the same boat as you are.... RawChat : Raw Chat |
Go to K9kidneys.com. They will give you a wealth of information. Your dog needs to be on a low phosphorus diet. |
