Spaying after 1st Heat? How long? Hello all, I've been trying to search through threads to find an answer, but not coming up with what I'm looking for. I just scheduled my yorkie for her spay next Wednesday. Out of the blue, she began bleeding this morning and displaying all the classic heat signs (swelling, licking, etc). We are unsure of our pup's exact age as we got her second hand from someone moving and offered us no papers and have apparently missed the chance to spay before the first heat. I understand it is preferable for the vet to perform the spay while the dog is not in heat, but how long do we have to wait to reschedule at this point? Is it ok to spay once the active bleeding stops, or do we wait until after the approximate 21 day "cycle" ends. I will be calling the vet tomorrow morning for their preference, but thought I would ask here as well. Thank you! |

Thank you for the quick reply! Most appreciated! |
My vet said it would be a little more complicated (and more expensive) to spay if Rio was in heat because there is more bleeding during surgery. She recommended to wait until the heat cycle is complete. But luckily we were lucky in our timing and had Rio spayed at 8 1/2 months, before her first heat. |
I've always heard to spay them between heats...In other words, about 3 months after and 3 months before the next heat... |
My vet will not spay during the cycle for fear of major complications. I had made the appts for both my cattle dog before her first heat 12 years ago and made an appt for my yorkie when I got her. Believe it or not, they both came in to heat just days before appts. so I called and the office rescheduled. We had to wait about 3 to 4 weeks. Better safe than sorry. |
My Roxie came into heat a few days before her scheduled heat. he vet said to wait 30 days before spaying her. Cali was in heat and they thought she had an obstruction so they went ahead and spayed her during her heat and also did the liver biopsy she needed to diagnose her MVD. I had it done at the 24 hour ER hospital by a board certified surgeon since she was under there care. She had a harder recovery and it was very very expensive, but had to be done. |
Thank you all for your replies! I spoke with my vet's office today. Their preference is to wait until approximately two months after a pup's first heat to perform the spay, so we are now rescheduled for March. Now to figure out the diaper/pad situation... Any recommendations? |
There are several different size diaper panties that you could get at PetCo, PetSmart or Pet Supermarket. Since she is in heat now, you should buy one from one of these places. Ebay has them custom made, and some members here make them as well. But you need them ASAP so the best bet is to go to one of the stores listed above and get the size you need. I'd heard that it was hard on them to do it during heat and more expensive. Welcome to YT. |
It is because of the danger of bleeding that vets prefer to wait. |
