Does anyone know if food allergy can cause scratching and diarrhea?
 

My yorkie has mucusy diarrhea on and off sometimes it has blood. She also scratches and gnaws at her feet. Could a food allergy cause of these symptoms?

Yes a food allergy causes scratching. For the loose mucasy stools, I am not sure. I would take your puppy to the vet. it could be something else. It is better to be safe than sorry I always say. Also you don't want him or her to get dehydrated. Hope all is ok!

what are you currently feeding her?

She has been to the vet several times and he says her tummy is very sensitive. Everything else is okay.
Right now for her tummy I'm feeding her I/D Prescription Diet.

Her mucusy diarreah could be caused by a multitude of things.....I'd find another vet.

The scratching....could very well be food.....There is a way to determine if that is the problem. Feed her white fish and brown rice......if the itching stops....most likely the food....however, it could also be shampoo your using or something in your house.

have the diarhea tested do a full diarhea panel by idexx lab and yes it can be tied to diet. I disagree on the brown rice sorry :( as i fed brown rice and rice is a grain so allergy dogs are allergic to grains. Also brown is high in fiber and has to be cooked 20 min longer than humans but after experiencing a dog with diarhea feeding brown rice made it worse if you only had the diarhea no itching then i would do white rice - the brown went right through my dog whole as i wanted to feed brown as i thought healthier and it made the diarhea worse as dogs with colitis and this could be colitis need a low fiber diet. I recommend using probiotics immediately - i use dds plus from vitamin shoppe two capsules 30 min before breakfast it is non-dairy so hypoallergenic so you do not have to worry about protein nor do you have to worry about being lactose intolerant. I stopped this in my allergy dog and all heck broke loose so now i know it really worked so very important for ibd and allergy dogs to be on probiotics

What are you feeding? How old is your dog as allergies and ibd (food intolerance) usually take place from 6 mos to 3 years old? Do not bath in oatmeal it is a grain and hypoallergenic shampoos are best - I use dr bronners mild unscented baby shampoo it is all organic oils with castille soap very mild and no allergents in it.

need some more info as to when this itching and diarhea started etc and above questions as very familiar with ibd and allergies as have been dealing with this for 5 years and go to dermatologist, etc. I will try to help as best i can. A vet this week told me yorkies are notorious for intestinal issues as well as skin issues and sounds like you have both going on

is the i/d working for the digestive issues?

We had the same issues with Zeke and took him into the vet. They said it was allergies, either food or his environment. We started him on Hill's z/d and eliminated all other foods, and picked out sensitive shampoo. He is doing much better but the vet said we might have to keep Zeke on this diet until he is about a year old.

My pug didnt get the runs but he was scratching all over and his belly was red. I switched him to Blue Buffalo small breed adult and he is 100% better! My yorkie eats the Blue Buffalo puppy and is doing great!

Hi -- don't know if you're still interested in answering this question, but we could really use your help. My Zoe (4 lbs) has developed terrible itching in the last five months, gnawing feet, etc. At times she causes sores that bleed. I now have her wearing a flexible e-collar, but don't want to have to do this forever. She will be eight years old in April. She has always been on raw food -- Primal Nuggets and has done very well, along with a very small snack of Wysong Anergen (only lamb and rice dry) once a day. In the last few weeks she has now also developed soft stools. Vet recommended Omega 3's, but only fed these twice in small amounts, she can't tolerate fats. Allergy testing was quoted to me as $800.00 for the test and $200.00 for each vial of injectable serum to be given for the rest of her life. Help? Thank you in advance!!

WOW! I wasn't aware allergy tests were so expensive. I am dealing with this now. As for her tummy she developed this about after a year and half. On I/d she does good but, lately after 3 weeks she gets diarrhea again. And, as for the scratching it's been going on for a few months. I'm not sure what to do.

8 years old so probably food related or something new in environment? Allergies start at age 6mos to 3 years so I would have thyroid panel done due to age and have 6 panel done through dr jean dodds Hemopet/Hemolife, HEMOPET a full animal blood bank, Diagnostic Laboratory, Adoption and Consultation, michigan state or antech lab to rule out hypothyroid as thyroid issues can cause skin issues. I would go very basic on food and call the food companies and see if they changed their formula recently that could be causing this sudden change. Tshirts help to keep them from bloodying themselves and i have socks also to keep dd from chewing her paws

what lab is that allergy testing done through ? as we had one done at bio-medical lab for $400 and spectrum labs for $400 seems kind of high- is that skin testing or blood testing? VARL i have heard is the most accurate lab for blood testing but blood cannot determine food allergy only enviromental so for food it is an elimination diet

Did you switch her foods/products to other brands? Maybe your yorkie is allergic to some of the ingredients..

Hi -- am sorry it took me so long to get back. Thanks so much for all your help, it's really appreciated. I couldn't believe the prices for allergy testing I was quoted were for real, either. This is in CA. In PA, for instance, I was told the exact same testing (blood) could be done for $165, with each vial of serum only $65 for each. This $800 for test/$200 per vial thing is insane, but they are sticking to their prices. Will definitely go for the thyroid panel and see if that helps, thank you. Then on to the other test, am grateful for the info. For now (don't laugh), Zoe wears four legged pajamas with her feet covered whenever she goes out. Have heard there is a kind of grass that is hypoallergenic -- female buffalo grass. If her problem turns out not to be thyroid, perhaps changing the grass will be an option. Did try changing her food, but no help.

welcome to california where the vet prices are through the roof :( stinks and i will not laugh as my girl is in a long sleeve turtleneck daily lollll to protect her skin from itching - allergies are the worst thing ever :( no real cure just keep them comfortable

Did you just move to california and why she is having issues at this late age? California is one of the worst places to live with an allergy dog and yes we have thought of moving for our dee dee lollll

and if doing allergy testing through blood i would recommend VARL lab as on an allergy group and many have had great success with that lab - i had two done on dd before i joined the group :(so went to two different labs as wanted to compare

Thank you everyone for all, very much appreciated! dwerten -- can't thank you enough for the labs, the dermatology clinic and the info. Do you know if Jean Dodds sees patients herself? Will also look into the Animal Dermatology clinic. Am not new to CA anymore, but have contacts who keep me informed of all the cheaper vet prices back east :-P
Do not use flea products, Zoe runs high fevers, vom and diarrhea with those. Do use friendly nematodes in the yard and have had no fleas for several years now. Can't use steroids, oils or fats (lux patellas, pancreatitis). Z wears infant size short sleeved T-shirts and these seem to help but back end still itches (Dee Dee is wonderful in hers!). Do have Oreck air purifier and hypoallergenic a/c filters. Use only hypoallergenic detergents. No more oatmeal shampoo, will look for Blue at Petco. Z eats only Primal Nuggets raw Lamb and Rice and Anergen (lamb and rice, no grains). She seems to be getting loose stools now though if I change the ingredients at all, so maybe food could be a factor :( Loose stools with even small amts of digestive enzymes or probiotics, too :-(

yes jean does all our titers and blood work she is wonderful and does a consult with us as well and she checks them over - she is wonderful and always helpful by phone or email. She has been a God send to us.
