How Do You Store Your Dog Food I am wondering this since the fresh bag of food I had gotten tonight was eaten faster than I have seen my Yorkie eat in a while. The brand, "Blue" comes in such a large bag that it took quite a while to go thru it. I store his dog food in a plastic container with a lid, of which I found at Walmart I believe in the plastic section. Do I need a special container like what you find in the dog food stores~? Thanks. |
I use one of the dog food containers that's on wheels, it has a blue lid that flips up and it's airtight so the food doesn't go stale. I would think as long as the food isn't going stale and no bugs or moisture can get in it should be o.k. |
I keep mine in a large screw top container that I got at Petco. A tip I recently saw was to keep the bag inside the container and NOT to dump it out. It will keep it fresher. I plan to do that with the next bag. I think if it's in an airtight container, it should be fine. :D Donna |
I did pour the contents in the container, which filled to the top. It was difficult to get the lid on. Maybe I will look for another container next time I go. Should I keep the bag that I dumped in the garbage can, or wait till next time~? I just turned it upside down and it is a Rubbermaid, 21 cup/5L container. It is filled to the tippy-tip top. |
I actually have two pretty big containers with a blue top and wheels that I bought from PetSmart. I actually mix a few different brands (Welness, Blu, etc) of food for my yorkies so i need containers this big anyway. Right now I have two seperate containers because one is puppy formula and the other is adult small breed. I believe their meant to hold dog food and seems to seal very well. I even bought one of those stainless steel scoopers from PetEdge. |
They might have just altered the formula. I got Scruffs a new bag of Innova EVO today and I think they altered the formula a little since it looks and smells a bit different and Scruffs ate the whole thing fast, usually he is a slow eater and doesn't finish. It could just be that since it is a different batch it tastes different. |
to clarify...what I should have said is NOT to dump the food out of the bag, but to put the bag of food into the airtight container. I bought the container because we had a moth problem with dog food several years ago (before Gunnar). That was fun...NOT! :thumbdown Donna |

I have to dog food containers with snap on lids that I got from walmart. They were fairly cheap and work great. |
I have a container that holds 6 pounds of food. I got it at Petsmart. It has a pale green lid that is hinged on one side and clicks on the other. I know its cheaper to buy the larger bags of food but I feel they dont stay as fresh so I buy the 6pound bag of food and go to the pet store more often. My four-legged kids enjoy the visits to the store anyway :D |
I have a sealed container that I keep the babies food in...it is almost like a pitcher...it has its sealing lid but then it also has a lid in the lid that I just lift up and can reach in to get the measuring scoop to scoop out their food! :) |
