is my yorkie pregnant? Hi all, sorry to post up a new thread when I am sure one is possibly running but I am very worried tonight and found your forum. Basically...about 2 months ago my little yorkie had a frolick with the dog next door and apparently penatration did occur but there was no locking (the kids were in charge of the dogs so I did not actually see but they are teenagers so pretty accurate in their accounts). My dog is now producing milk and acting pretty submissive but she has no swollen stomach. Wondering what you think before I call the vet in the morning...phantom or real?? |
sorry i dont know the answer, but i would see your vet asap so that if she is pregnant, you can get the best possible care for the new mum. |

Thanks people, I appreciate what you are saying and I will take her to the vet tomorrow but I was just so horrified when I saw the milk today that I figured I would see what some experts thought. She is not a prime example of the breed and she is pretty small which worries me all the more but she is a lovely family dog and my gut instinct because she has no tummy is telling me she is not pregnant but I just wondered about this milk thing and the fact she has never had a "boyfriend" before sent her into a phantom, never the less she did have a bit of fun. She is 7 years old!! I thought she was past it? What really do you think the chances are? |

Do not worry, she will be off to the vets first thing but that will not make me sleep any the better tonight.....do you really think it is possible or likely? |

The 7 years old for a first whelp is scary. The lactation, well chances are pretty good that she is. |
I would watch her very closely and have an emergency vets phone number on hand. Generally, mom will start producing milk just prior to delivery, this is a sign that she will go into labor soon. She might or might not get a tummy, it depends on how many there are and how small they are (the babies). I would also suggest that you get things ready just in case. It would be better to be prepared rather then running around trying to come up with supplies when she is in labor. I'm sure you would want to be by her side instead. I'm not an expert but you should get a heating pad and a small box ready. Put the heating pad under the box and a small blanket in the box. You will use this to put the puppies in if you have to take them from mommy while she is having another one. I can't think of the name of it but you need that nasel suction thing that you use on a infant baby to suction the puppies nose and mouth. Always suction the nose first then the mouth. There is so much more (supplies) that you need, just pray that if she is pregnant, she waits until tomorrow when you can consult the vet. Keep us posted:) Here is a very useful site: www.debbiejensen.com |
OMG what a worry. There are numerous on call vets so that is ok and we are not worried about the money, I just hope she is ok. She sleeps with us so I am sure I will hear or she will let me know if there are any probs! She seems fine at the moment! I will let you all know how I get on in the morning at the vets and thanks so much to you all who have taken the time to reply. I know plenty about her but nothing about breeding. Will I sleep tonight?...Noooooooo! Off to bed now and thanks once again X |

No he did not prescribe antibiotics as she appears fine and only has mild symptoms other than the milk and he did give her a real thorough checking over. I will not get her spayed no, I would do ordinarily but the vet does not recommend it as she had an anaesthetic in the past when she was young for a knee op and they had real problems with her. Weighing up the benefits to the risk I do not think it would be a good idea and nor did the vet. Thanks so much everyone x |
Glad that things worked out ok---and if she had anethesia probs. in the past, best to avoid! |

Anesthesia is much safer now than it was seven years ago. |
