Female spaying Hi All I have a female yorkie aged 9 months she has just come out of her first heat and i plan on getting her spayed next week i am really worried that she will be in pain afterwords has anyone any idea how long she will take to recover please????:( |
They recover pretty quickly! Mine was only sorta groggy the first day and then seemed back to herself. I would still make her take it easy for at least a few days though.... |
Apple seemed to be rather uncomfortable the day of surgery (I picked her up that day) and a little uncomfortable the next day, but by the 3rd day she was trying to jump and hop around too much for my liking...Of course, you have to watch them for at least a week or so, so they don't let anything rip or slip... |
Check with you vet on the how soon after a heat it is okay to spay her. Working with rescue I've had numerous dogs spayed and most all of them, by that evening were doing just fine. Of course, they are not up to running around (and shouldn't be allowed anyway) but for the most part the recovery time is fast. Be certain to ask your vet questions ahead of time, about pre-op bloodwork, type of anesthetic used and after surgery care. |
Here is a good link to info on spay procedures and what to ask your vet: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-protocol.html Also, every female is different and spaying is a major surgery, one of mine took quite a while to recover where another was ready to climb mount everest the next day ;) The important thing is to have good communication with your vet, and what to look for as signs of pain or discomfort after the procedure. Talk to your vet about pain management and what their procedures are. |
I just had the pom I was fostering spayed at and by the next day she was back to her wild ways, I had to keep her quiet so as to protect her incision. They generally recover pretty quickly after the first day or two. My vet usually gives them a pain shot before they leave and that lasts for 24 hours and then gives some pills for pain if they need it. None of mine have ever needed it. I will keep your baby in my prayers for a safe spay. |
talk to your vet I took my yorkie in to get spayed, and thank goodness I had a vet that was experienced in small dogs. My Yorkie is only 4 lbs. and I took her in for the procedure. The vet made sure sha was able to maintain her blood sugar level while "under". She was not able to so he couldn't do the procedure. If he had, she might have died. Before you worry about discomfort, make sure you have a vet that is very familiar with small dogs. |

Good luck with your spay. Maggie May was in a little bit of pain the night of her spay, was the next day but a little out of it and quiet. By day 3 she was fine. We'll be sending good thoughts and prayers for a successful surgery. :) |
