Chew toys - what is safe? I got a yorkie magazine today and it had an article about chew toys. It said rawhide is a no-no but mine LOVE it! Apparantly they can choke on the soft parts that come off. The article said rubber toys and toys with treats inside are best. Does anyone know a good kind? I have never looked at them before and don't want to get one that is dangerous. It also said plush toys are good but I have a ton of those. If Nick and Daisy don't have something hard to chew on they will ruin all my sons toys so I have to find a safe alternative to rawhide. Any advise would be greatly appreciated! |
Rhianna is my chewer . . .she loves rawhide . . .I buy the bigger ones because the small Dingo ones disappear in a matter of hours . . .Rhianna is only allowed her "chewie" when I'm home . . .it always gets put away when I'm at work or out that way I can supervise her chewing . . .She used to chew up the nylabones too and those little pieces also can be dangerous . . . |
I was looking at a kong chew toy. Has anyone tried those? They have them for puppies so they are small and the ingredients in the treats for them actually don't look that bad. |
Yes, mine love the kongs. I buy the little ones for my Yorkies & the giant ones for my Skyes, who can chew through concrete I'm sure! Nylabones are very popular with my lot too. xx Meggie |
Do you get the puppy ones or do they make one small enough for yorkies? Are your pups able to chew chunks off them? Quote:

The kongs are hard and usually chew proof. However I have read on here of at least one yorkie chewing it untill it fell apart. I dont think that is a common thing though at least with yorkies. They are great to put peanut butter or yogurt in and freeze them |
Kongs are fantastic Beckham loves the Kong, we bought the medium sized black kong that is heavy duty...he carries it around like its a stogie :D. We got him one toy that we call "dragon" he tears that up pretty badly but we buy them in twos so we can replace right away...works out great. |
Got two puppy kongs tonight. They LOVE them!! Thank you for the suggestion - it is greatly appreciated. :) |
The Merrick Wishbone dog treat is 100% natural and will last for a few days. Most better pet stores carry them. |
chewies I use to give Belle, my morkie, rawhide until I realized she was getting small pieces off and it isn't good for them. The best thing I found on YT is bully sticks. YTer AMD sells them and you can also buy them in dog food marts. They love them and they last a long time. Some of them get stinky, but you can get ones that aren't. It takes Belle along time to get hers down to the point where I take it away. I still don't let her have it if I'm not supervising but she has never choked on it like she did rawhide. She drags hers all over and tucks it in her bed and lays on it to keep it away from our lab! |
Why don't you try using Bullysticks? This is what I switched to once I learned how dangerous rawhide is. Seems like all dogs love Bullysticks. |
petsmart we go this bone for axle dont' know what its made of at petsmart and he loves it...it white its real hard its only about 4 inches and 1 inch round when we got it axle was to little my husband cut it in half long ways and the thing smelled like you were at the dentist getting your teeth cleaned that smell went away and this is his favorite bone! he has had it now for 7 weeks and chews on it every moring while I'm sitting with him drinking my coffee. I'm sorry don't know what it is called but it is a real!!! bone they would know. he also has a nylabone, and the little greenies the mini ones he loves those as a treat but I only give him one maybe two in a day...he has the kong like mini little stuffed toys a duck and a teddy that come with the extra sqeekers so cute! |
