New dehydrator Hope everyone had a safe New Year!!! For Christmas I got a new food dehydrator. I have already dried some bananas for Maggie May and she loves them. I was wondering if anybody has any other recipes that they recommend for their furbaby:-) Thanks in advance!! |
I don't have the recipe but you could definitely make your own chicken jerky since most of the jerky sold in petstores comes from China! I don't know the recipe but I'm soooo jealous you got a dehydrator! :) |
What kind did you get? I make chicken, beef and lamb jerky for Prince, and he loves it. I only make lamb and sometimes beef jerky now because Prince is sensitive to chicken (including eggs). Recipe for chicken, beef or lamb jerky: Use chicken breast, very lean beef or lamb, and slice very thin and dehydrate! That's it. I don't use any oils nor seasonings. I keep it healthy. I would cook the meat in my oven (I don't have a dehydrator) for about 3 hours, and flip mid-way throught the cooking cycle. (I used a pizza stone...again, no oil). |

I have been making sweet potato chips. Jax, our diabetic babe can eat these too. I wash the potato, I do not peel them (extra fiber in the skins) and slice them up. Place them on the dehyrator. They take about 12-14 hrs to become crisp, depending on how thick they are. I then store them in a ziplock. My pack loves them! To make jerky, I freeze chicken breast prior to slicing it, it is easier to cut. I don't season it either, just place slices on the dehydrator and turn it on. I have done liver too. It is messy and takes a long time due to all the moisture but makes for some good treats. |
We also make homemade chicken jerky with our dehydrator. DH bought it just for Gizmo! Its also cheaper than buying jerky at the pet store! I'll have to try out the sweet potato chips in it, Gizmo loves sweet potatoes! DH does marinate the chicken in low sodium chicken broth overnight before dehydrating it. I keep telling him that he doesn't have to, that Gizmo would like it just fine plain, plus I was worried about all the sodium in it. What do you guys think? DH says its to add some "flavor" to it! I tried dehydrating fruit but Gizmo just doesn't seem to like any kinds of fruit! He prefers veggies! |

Thank you for all of your replies. I am anxious to try them this weekend. I have already made banana chips and Maggie May loves them. I really want to try some jerky. Keep the replies coming and I will let you know how I do this weekend:-) |

How interesting I often wondered about this myself.. thanks for sharing.. |
I have tried the bananas and was very successful. going to try apples today. What other fruits and veggies have you tried??? |
I have a dehydrator that I've only used a few times. I've made the sweet potatoes in there and green beans (which take a lot less time to dehydrate). We've also made chicken jerky -- we take organic chicken breast, put it through a meat grinder (if you dont have one a cuisinart might work or have your butcher do it) , and then I add chopped up fresh parsely and mint. It was a big hit! Oh and when the jerky is done, I bake it in the oven at 180 degrees for 30 minutes just to make sure all the bacteria is killed. Then, I put it into zip lock vaccum bags and freeze it. It stayed fresh for months! Good luck with your dehydrator and have fun. |
PS the mint and parsley give them fresh doggie breath too! |
I had a dehydrator when my children was young and I loved it. |
