Pet Insurance or Not... That is the question! Wondering what everyone's thought is on pet insurance... Our first yorkie Oscar died last January of an intestinal disease - which cost us about $11,000. We didn't have insurance but I had put away about $100 a month when we first got him - so I had the money saved for the vet bills. However, now we have two yorkies - Carson who is 20 months old and Chloe who is 7 months old, and broke her front leg three minutes after arriving home with us (two weeks ago). Thank goodness my mom is going to cover the $4,000 (long story - was my sisters fault for Chloe breaking her leg) for us. Anyway, we can start putting away $100 a month - but if something happens within a couple years (like what happened with Oscar) we won't have enough money put aside. I've found a place (Vet Insurance) where we can get the two of them insured for about $80 a month (less a deductible and 10% of the costs) but I wanted to find out what everyone else thinks? Thank you in advance for your help! Jacalyn Carson & Chloe |
i am in the process of looking for insurance. my yorkie had 2 surgeries that wiped us out financially. i am getting the insurance once i decide on which company. |
Vet Insurance has a $20,000 cap for each dog, unlike other companies that have a $2,500 cap for each injury or illness. I think that is one of the main reasons why I thought Vet Insurance was best. |
I have been considering pet insurance as well. The one I was looking at was VPI however, after reading other member posts - it appears that Embrace may be better and it allows you to adjust the cap and deductibles to what you prefer. Hope that helps. |
Thank you I'll look up Embrace too! |
I say yes to pet insurance. I use VPI and I have been very happy with it. I signed up 10/17/09 and Jersey broke his leg and had surgery 11/09/09. They paid up with no problem. I do not have experince with any others. :) |
I also have VPI for my 4 and love it, is peace of mind if anything happens, I think is worth every penny.. hugs, Carmen in nj |
My3 are covered by VPI and it runs about 23.00 per dog per month. I have been happy with them. I haven't checked into others as one of mine has some pretty significant conditions that may be ridered out if I switched insurances. Also with Cali having used it so much they never cancelled her and didn't raise her premium. |
There is a website Pet Insurance Review. The have hundreds of reviews for pretty much all pet insurance. I don't know if that will help, but I found it to be a good resource. |
That website is so helpful, thanks! |

I have Vet insurance (Trupanion) and I really like them! Not only is there no caps but you can choose your own deductible which is nice because you can do a free quote on their website to see what you would actually be paying each month! Pet insurance is seriously so nice to have because it literally takes that burden off your shoulders! |
With Vet Insurance did they ever increase your rates? I noticed a few people saying they did this to them - after they made a claim or when the pet was getting older. Have you had to make any claims, and how long have you been with them? |
