How much do you feed your baby? Cody is starting to get alittle belly (as cute as it maybe), how much do you feed your yorkie? (how many times, and how much each time) So yesh. . . xD |
Well, since each dog is different, different weight, size, body frame, amount of exercise, etc., what I feed my yorkies may not help you (Mine are large, but in shape, at 13 and 17 lbs). I do know that a minor change in amount of food or quantity of exercise can reap huge rewards with these dogs. (unlike humans, dogs seem to be able to lose weight somewhat easily). If you think your baby is getting a little tubby, cut back a little on the food and if necessary, increase his exercise a little. It should work. Since you asked, mine each get approximately a cup of kibble per day...but that should be more than a more standard size yorkie should get. In the past, I have been known to substitute a portion of kibble with green beans as I was decreasing their food quantity. This helped to keep them full while getting used to a smaller quantity of kibble. |
I free feed mine & have none overweight |

This helped me alot actually! Cody is expected to be anywhere from 7 - 15 lbs (both of his parents sizes) as he is a Mini Poodle/Yorkie mix. I feed him 1/2 a cup twice a day. I'll try and excersize him more and if this isn't the right amount I should be feeding him I'll cut back on his kibble. |
Just reduce his food a little. Seems a shame to have a fat dog (since they have a lot of health issues), when it is so easy just to limit their food. Our neighbors had a fat Cocker Spaniel, same litter as ours (we got them as rehomes when they were older), anyways, it died at age 8 or 9 and ours lived to be 16.. Big difference. He was good and active years after the other cocker died. Exercise and a correct diet is all they need. I feed Scruffs 1/3 cup twice a day of Innova EVO. Sometimes its less if he feels heavier or ate too many treats that day. |
I free feed mine as well. So far the vet has no complaints. They don't get a lot of time to eat. One of them is always bugging the other to play. :-) |
I free feed to an extent. I put 1.5 - 2 cups of food down per day and let Troy go at it when he wants. |
3 Attachment(s) Thanks everyone. I've attached pictures to get feedback, maybe I'm just imagining a puppy belly on him. |
I am NO EXPERT here... but goodness he is a little cutie and I DON'T see any belly! |
Its hard to tell from pics but take a look at this link. This might help. The first one in the rating check tells about being able to feel the ribs. Thats the one I recall my vet mentioning a year ago when I was inquiring whether my first yorkie was getting fat. :) How Do I Determine if My Dog is Overweight? |
oh and by the way...Cody is adorable! |
My Freedom 9yrs- weighs 12-13lb and eats 1/4 food 2x/day. He is a bit chunky for his build. Jax is 10 and diabetic, he is 7lbs and eats 1/4 cup of food 2x/day as well. |
oops - sorry |
Thanks so much for the info guys! |
Couver is 7 pounds, and he basically free feeds. I put down 1/3 cup of kibble twice daily, and he never eats it all. |
