6 yr old yorkie started overeating recently....cause for concern? My 6 year old female yorkie who is normally pretty active, daily playtime outside and long walks 4-5 times a week has recently started overeating. I feed her twice a day with a wet food/dry food mix, and then we have left dry food out in between meals for the last 6 years. She normally doesn't care about eating much between meals. Only recently, she has become fixated on the food and frequently eats between meals and cleans the whole bowl of dry food. I have 1 other minature schnauzer, and he can eat out of the bowl too, but he leaves it alone after his meal. At first, I thought she may just want to eat his food, but she is still doing this hours later or when he's not even around. I have been taking the food up, but she is constantly obsessed with eating between meals and scours the kitchen for crumbs. Could this be any kind of problem? Is she just doing this because she is bored or getting older? I'm thinking about taking her to the vet to check her out, but I don't know what the potential problem could be. Anyone else have problems with an older yorkie overeating? thanks! Stefanie |
Questions for the OP... Is she neutered? Could she be pregnant? Has she had fleas? She could have worms?! How long has this gone on? |
My first thought is that she could have an underactive thyroid. There are a few other things that it could be - your vet should be able to do blood work and find out if anything is wrong. |
Thanks for the responses! I think I will take her for some blood work. She has gotten some fleas lately from a visit to my parents house which is at a lake/wooded areas. She is on Frontline though, but she always comes back with a few when we visit there. The fleas seem really bad this season, the weather here in Georgia hasn't gotten cold enough to freeze for them. Anyway, this overeating has been going on for at least the last 2 months. I am guilty of letting her heartworm medication lapse for at least a month and a half which I know is just awful. I have 2 different kinds for her and my miniature schnauzer for weight limits, and hers ran out before his. I was hoping to just get theirs both all at once. Besides that visit to my parents, she is exclusively indoors and on supervised walks outside. But I hope she doesn't have worms! She seems to be gaining weight and not losing it though. They will run bloodwork to check for worms at the vet, so I will ask them to check her thyroid if possible at the same time. My baby is getting older, and I am starting to worry about even the smallest issue, but better safe than sorry! I need to stock up on her medicine this next time and just bite the bullet for the costs. Thanks for the suggestions, I wasn't sure if it could be a big cause for concern, but now I know it could be. |
You might want to have them check her for Cushing's Syndrome, too. That would make her hungry all the time. |
