Luxating Patella Grade 1 Chase went to the vet for a rabies vaccine yesterday, during the visit he was diagnosed with luxating patella grade 1 on his left hind leg. She said a lot of toy breeds have the "trick knee" and we'll continue to monitor, but it should not be a problem. The weather's been really cold here and towards the end of a walk, Chase does favor the LP leg. It doesn't happen unless it's freezing out and after a moment he's able to walk again? Even though there is no way to predict if the LP will progress, I really hope it doesn't. His favorite activities are running and jumping :(. Should I start him on Cosequin? The vet did not suggest any supplements or doing anything different. I don't want to give him anything that is not necessary... |

Uni has got grade 3, and since I have started her on Cosequin she has not hiked her leg since. I highly recommend it. I hear her knees pop on occasion, but much better. |
Supplements definitely will help. Is your vet versed in small toy dogs? If not, I would suggest that you find one who is. What may work for a larger breed dog may not necessary apply to the little ones. Best of luck. My Hot Rod went thru lp surgery, grade 3. It was not fun or cheap. |
Thanks everyone! I'm going to research Cosequin. I was considering switching vets before because I liked the idea of a holistic vet, but we've been with our current vet since I brought Chase home. Maybe I will look into a vet specialized in toy breeds as well... We're trying to discourage him from jumping off the couch, etc. As for weight gain, it's never been an issue for us (yay!). On a side note, I learn so much from this forum. It definitely helps during vet visits and they are always surprised when I'm able to "speak" in medical jargon :p. |

I think Mya has LP1 as well...I am making her a vet appt tomorrow to double check...she had legg perthes in her right hip so she used her left leg more often which I think causes the LP? I just bought her Cosequin in hopes of it helping. Why do I think it's LP you ask? haha well I felt a pop in the knee...tried to replicate it when I was holding her-and I could indeed replicate it and make it happen again. As for when I tried to show it to someone else-of course the knee seemed to behave and not pop!! (which fortunately eased some worry as the severity must be so slight). Anyway, Mya loves running and jumping too...we're on the same page!! |
Oh, and I completely can relate to the ability to comprehend and describe things to the vet thanks to YorkieTalk! Ya'll have made me a self-proclaimed expert in Legg-Perthes/Femoral Head Ostectomy and basically anything else that has caused me worry!! So thanks YT!! |
