Layla is sick I woke up at 5 this morning when my boyfriend said Layla was throwing up. She threw up her stomach contents twice, and was dry-heaving a bit. She settled down and I went back to bed, only to hear her about half an hour later again. My boyfriend woke up and cleaned up some yellow bile. Not long after, she threw up bile again in another room. Then I caught her starting to dry heave again and took her to her pad to throw up on... but she couldn't hold it and she threw up while I was carrying her. I didn't have any ground beef or chicken handy so I just gave her about a half cup to a cup of plain rice and she scarfed it down. She seemed to be acting quite normal, not as hyper as usual, but still following me around all morning with her ears and tail high. I went home for lunch and found 4 piles of undigested rice she had thrown up, plus two little puddles of bile. She just can't seem to keep anything down. She did poop sometime this morning and it looked completely normal so I think that would rule out any sort of parasite, right? |
Sorry to hear Layla is not feeling well. if she continues I would take he to the vet as she can get dehydrated throwing up that much. |
Thanks. I was worried about the vet being open over the holidays. If she is still throwing up by tomorrow morning I will try to make an appointment. |
Maybe in the mean time you can give her some pedilyte to help keep her hydrated. Hoep she feels better soon. |
I'll definitely try to keep her hydrated. She seems to be drinking a lot, she had a bowl and a half of water overnight. Someone just mentioned it may be a bowel obstruction and I should take her to the vet. But she wouldn't be having normal bowel movements if it were a bowel obstruction, right? |
:( I'm sorry your baby is sick. From your description and imo it sounds more like gastroenteritis. My advice is to get her to the vet or at least give them a call. I hope everything works out. |
Thanks for the reply! She hasn't thrown up all afternoon... she hasn't eaten anything, but at least there's no bile coming up either. She is a little mopey but was still really excited to see me when I got home from work. I think I'll see how she does through the night and give the vet a call in the morning if she throws up again. |
I need some advice. For an update, Layla hadn't thrown up all afternoon, but at about 7:30 last night she started dry heaving and I carried her to her pad. She dry heaved for about 5 minutes and finally out came some brownish red foam and a few little clots of blood. I freaked out and took her straight to the emergency vet. When we got there we found out we'd need to pay an astronomical amount just to sit in the waiting room and it may be an all-night wait. I had no idea what to do. My boyfriend remembered his friend is friends with a vet and we were desperate so we called her just for an opinion if we should stay or if we could come home and take her in the morning. She said make sure she has water but don't feed her for the night, and keep an eye on her. If she got worse, take her back to emergency. When we got home she was acting quite normal... a little more lethargic, but she did play a little bit and we gave her a bath so she didn't smell like puke, and she was rolling around on the bed trying to get dry, just like normal. She didn't drink very much, but she did go to her water dish once that I know of for a little water. I'm going to take her in this morning, but I was wondering if I should try feeding her some more rice before we go? Maybe some really moist rice in case she's feeling dehydrated... |
BUMP! I hope someone reads this Another update... Layla drank water normally before I went to work, peed on her pad (she has been peeing normally throughout the issue) and didn't want to eat the rice but did eat some kibble. She was running around, hyper and happy like her old normal self. I decided I would come to work this morning and see how she does with keeping her food down by this afternoon. I have the afternoon off work anyway so I will be free to take her if she is feeling sick again. Could the blood have just been from dry heaving for about 5 minutes before getting anything out? She is acting totally fine again. I freaked out with the blood because I know that's not normal, but she honestly seemed this morning to be almost 100% better... she doesn't feel bloated anymore, and she doesn't seem to be in discomfort if I press on her belly. Her gums are still pink and she's not as mopey as she was all day yesterday. |
No more throwing up.... |
Hopefully Layla is on the mend, but I am NO expert nor do I have any experience to give advice. Personally, while I seek advice here and insight - I always also contact my vet to discuss these issues. Maybe I am just lucky, but my vet will talk directly with me if I have anything serious going on. Good luck and I hope she is all better! |
Thanks for your reply. Layla is acting normal again so it seems like it was just a stomach bug that she has gotten over. Last night I was surprised that I couldn't even talk to a vet without paying money, until we called one at home that we only knew through a friend. For now, she's drinking water, still has pink gums, and is running around wagging her tail, so I'm sure she's over whatever it was! |
Glad to hear Layla is feeling better. When my Cali had HGE she was throwing up and pooping blood and she looked so sick so it sounds like Layla may have had a little bug and is feeling better. |
