Help with some POOP questions and research please!! Okay, so we've been thinking we saw tapeworm segments in Sadie's poop a while ago. We treated for it, despite the vets not finding eggs in her fecal sample, but they thought they were seeing it in her poop too, and maybe we were all correct. Well right after her worming, she got sick with a bacteria in her stomach and was having diarrhea and vomitting, we got meds and she seemed better. Her stools were solid again but still looking like white rice segments. Then she got sick again, same bacteria didn't completely go away and is now still on antibiotics and is eating a home cooked boiled chicken and white rice diet. Her poop is coming out and looking like about 85-90% white rice. Is this normal? Should I worry. I'm pretty darn sure it's not worms and they don't move, it really looks like packed up solid poop full of white rice. What should I do? If I call the vet, I might get the big speech about natural diets and how she should be on prescription Science Diet crap that they gave to me, but I want to know if it's hurting her to not digest the rice so well and it's coming out whole mostly. I also want to know if switching to brown rice would be healthier overall, because even her normal diet calls for rice in it. What do you all think? Any experience with rice in stools or in feeding natural diets that include white or brown rice? Thanks, |
I've given the chicken and white rice before with no issues. I wouldn't worry as long as she's eating and isn't throwing it up or has diarrhea. |
that sounds very odd. do you think maybe sadie is having trouble digesting her food? Does the rice type stuff in her poo look like its rice thats just gone straight through her? |
I'm sure we could all cope with a close up picture of sadies poo, if you feel like posting one!..maybe we could work out whats going on then? |
Hmm, you don't want to give her brown rice, bc if it's not prepared right, they have a hard time digesting it & it can cause colitis (blood in poop). How about saving it (poop) & showing it to the vet, maybe even a different vet to get a 2nd opinion? Hope Sadie feels better soon! |
I would be going to a different vet. That sounds really weird . |
How much rice are you feeding her with the chicken? Sounds like she might have too much rice and not enough chicken in her food. I am confused why the vet thinks that you should do the canned and not the boiled chicken and rice. I thought that was pretty standard with the diarrhea issues. If you feel her poop is firm and her tummy is settled you should ease back to her regular diet at some point. You should also look into a vet that believes in a raw diet otherwise you are going to be fighting a losing battle with your current vet. |

we'll switch soon tho. anyways after talking to my nutritionist i found out i might just not be cooking the rice well enough and that it doesn't always digest all the way through just like sometimes corn does in our own poop...i know gross, but similar type of thing. so i just need to cook better and to get her back on her normal diet. |
I am so sorry for the issues you are having. I am not sure where you are located but my vet office came highly recommended to me and I personally am recommending them myself. I drive a bit to get there but not too far. It is Eagle Animal Clinic in Riverside, MO if you are interested. I can give you my specific vet's name (they have a few), their address and phone number if you wish to pm me. Good luck! I have gone thru different but difficult issues with my kitty so I can relate to some of your agony. Unfortunately I am not as familiar with dogs or yorkies so I am unable to provide any guidance. We are thinking of you and let us know if we can help in any way! |
thank you so much, PM me the information, i will be looking for a new vet now that Dr. Lowry is no longer the head dude at Banfield. btw...Banfields are not all bad, i love the services at mine, i just don't like one particular vet and the one i did like is now gone |

The only plain white rice I really know of w/ fiber in it (therefore, like corn) is sushi rice - are you feeding her sushi rice? The reason corn doesn't digest is bc of the fiber/cellulose in its wall, from how I understand its digestion process. That's why the theory of cooking veggies for dogs holds - bc you're "starting" the digestion process for them, by breaking down some of the chains for them (in a nutshell). But I don't really get this w/ the white rice/carbs...? I guess if this were me and I really wanted to continue to cook and my baby was having this much trouble w/ an ingredient - I wouldn't give the ingredient. Rather, I think I would switch carb sources. Perhaps try sweet potato or white potato, if that's agreeable to your dog's system? Maybe others have ideas for carb sources as well... |
Rachel...what ever happened w/ the rice thing...did you figure out what was going on there bc I'd be interested to hear an update and learn about the outcome... |
