From Pedigree too.. What food should I give my yorkie? Hi guys I’m new here, I got my Yorkie Ct(yes I know not your average dog name) when he was 4 months who is turning 1 this coming Sunday. When I got him his breeder told me to feed him Pedigree Dry Puppy Food, which I have been doing ever since I got him. He never showed much interest in the food at all, I know puppies don’t eat much but he would only pick out the square looking thing in the food and leave the brown kibbles. I tried everything to get him to eat, hand feeding him, soaking the food in water but he doesn’t really fancy it, he eats it now but not a lot. I asked my veterinarian what I should feed him she responded by asking me what I fed him, I told her and she said its fine and if he’s not eating give him Iams, I got a sample of it from her but he didn’t really pay it any attention. His bag of Pedigree looks like it’s coming to an end soon and I would really like to change his food soon while I still have some of the one he’s eating left so I can convert him over gradually. So here is my question 500 words later… What dry food do you guys recommend I switch him too? My friend recommended Royal Canin for Yorkshire Terriers since that’s what she feeds her Yorkie. |
Honestly, Pedigree, IAMS, etc ("grocery store brands") are really full of crap. Take a look at Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble and read some reviews and ratings. Some good brands I recommend - Nature's Variety, Fromm (those are the 2 foods I feed and Jackson LOVES them and he's picky! He eats the grain-free versions), as well as Merrick's, Innova, Taste of the Wild, Acana/Orijen. Check them out :) Good luck! Oh, and welcome to YT! Your little guy looks really cute from what I can see! |
Welcome to YT:) Grocery brand food is highly not recommended, the nutritional value really sucks. In my opinion, I'm really happy with Orijen and I think you should give it a shot. Also Ive heard many good things about Eagle Pack the puppy formula. You can find them at almost any pet store. Coco loves it and I'm very comfortable with the ingredients. Good luck:) |
That is the question! LOL You stick around here and you will see everyone has thier own opinion and great reasons for feeding the food they do. However, we just agree to disagree on some points. LOL We can do that here. Britster has given you a great website many here refer to. Ultimately, you have to feed the food that works for you and your guy, reguarless of the stars. Another great resource to check out is http://www.orijen.ca/orijen/ORIJEN_White_paper.pdf also, The Dog Food Project - How does your Dog Food Brand compare? As for your question, I feed Taste of the Wild. There are some on here that do not like this food, but it is the ONLY thing Maddie will eat. I tried her on many 'top foods' and she lost almsot 4 lbs!!! She would not eat, became fatigue. I started her back on TOTW, she is back to her ole, playful 13 pounds!!:p She LOVED Royal Canine but started getting itchy on it so I switched her off it. If she didn't have a problem with it we would be feeding it. Good Luck!:animal-pa |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys including the links. Looks like I have a bit of researching to do before I go out shopping this weekend. I just hope whatever I choose in the end he likes it. Here is a bigger version of that picture if you like.(He does look a bit disheveled though) :D |
Just wanted to say Welcome and say how Handsome CT is!!! |
all I can say is do your research and get ready to spend a decent amount of money finding him the right food that he will eat. You may want to check out the free samples link at the top of htis section or when you go to the petstores ask for samples before you go out a purchase a whole bag. If may take him awhile to adjust to a better quality food so give it some time. Good luck, welcome to YT and your baby is adorable!! |
