Is my puppy growing too fast? Hi when I got Pixie at 8 weeks she weighed 1.75lbs now at 17 weeks she weighs 3.75.. I feed her wellness just for puppy and I keep food in her dish at all times so that she can eat when she is hungry. My question is.........is her growth normal or is she growing to fast and is she overweight. Should I continue to let her free feed or just give her food 3 times a day. I just don't want to her to have weight problems at a young age. any suggestions? |

i think the puppy is growing normally. When I got Woody he was 10 weeks and 1.5 lbs. then by 4 months he was 3 lbs, and now at 6 months he's about 4 or 5 lbs. he looks fat to me, but I noticed that every day a different part of him is growing. like one morning I woke up and his head looked huge, literallhy it grew over night! they say don't restrict diet until 1 year. you can find a weight chart online |
I was very worried about my little guy's weight the first few months I had him and was always asking the vet about it. He was only "suppose" to be 3.5 lbs but by almost a year he is just a little over 6 lbs. The vet always tells me the same thing, if you can see the curvature of their hips (right where their tummy ends and their hind legs begin) then they are not overweight. If they start to look like a sausage with no indentation there then maybe I should cut back on the treats a little. Being so small I think their weight can fluctuate very easily so even small adjustments in their diet can cause an increase or decrease in weight. |
I've been wondering the same thing about my pup. When I got her at 7 weeks, she was 32 oz. At 11 weeks, she was 58 oz ... almost double! I've seen someone else here post that their pup was the same size as mine at 10 weeks, but only ended up at 5.5 lbs as an adult, so you just never know how closely they are going to follow the growth charts at all. I got my previous Yorkie when she was 9 months old. She weighed 4.5 lbs then, and you would think that she was almost done growing at that point, but she ended up at 8 lbs! I'm not worried about my girl being overweight, her shape is fine and I can easily feel her bones in all the right places and can tell she is quite skinny. I'm just concerned that growing too fast might cause a problem with her joints. |
I am glad I am not the only one that worries! I can still see an indentation in her hips so I think she doesn't look like a sausage yet! lol So free feeding is the way to go? Does everyone agree on that one? |
I can't free feed Winston. I really think he would eat the entire bag of food if I let him. He is such a fast eater and doesn't leave even one piece of kibble in his bowl after meal time. In fact when his play buddy (a Morkie named Tag) comes over and needs to eat dinner I have to hold Winston while Tag eats so Winston doesn't eat his food too. I guess I have to ask myself...is he still hungry - am I not feeding him enough? Thoughts anyone? |

Sounds pretty normal! I got Jackson at 9 weeks old and he weighed 5lbs. By 12 weeks old, he had reached 6.1lbs and by 16 weeks, he was 8.6lbs. Now, at over a year old, he's 12.5lbs :) |
