Question about spaying Lucy is coming up on 6 months now. She was born the end of June. She is losing her baby teeth. Last time she was weighed she was 4.2 pounds... she has grown a little bit more, but not too much. I have heard many different things, so I am wondering when I should get her spayed? I know yorkies can be very sensitive to anethisia so the whole idea makes me so nervous and sad for her, but I know that I have to do it because she is very small and I have no plans on breeding. oh and is it true that it is healthier for them to be fixed..... in terms of certain cancers? Anyways, I am thinking of getting her spayed in January. Is that too early? I am nervous for her to go into heat becuase I have been told that the price will double to spay her and that it is a lot harder on thier bodies. Ahhhh so many questions! Please help :):confused: |
I have chosen to wait with my little girl. She will be about 9.5 months when she is spayed next month, she is about 4.7 pounds and I dont expect her to get any bigger by then. I wanted to let her mature, finish growing, get all her adult teeth in, etc. before I had her spayed. The chances of her going into heat before that are pretty small, many toy dogs dont go into heat until closer to 12 months. But I am confident in my decision and if she does go into heat before then its fine. I know many people spay right at 6 months and I think that is fine too but I wouldnt do it any younger than that for sure. |
Hmm weird that your price goes up if she goes in heat before getting spayed?? Bailey has had one heat and she is getting spayed at the end of the month and it is the same price. I chose to wait because I wanted to make sure all her baby teeth would fall out and well it is a good thing I waited because now she has a double set of teeth and I am getting those removed at the same time so I DO NOT have to put her under twice. Although for the cancer part they do say to spay them before their first heat to prevent it completely... that is a good idea. I think once she lost all her teeth she should get spayed and so you know if there is a few teeth left not ready to fall out and she is getting her adult teeth beside them, then it is a good idea to get her spayed. I think january would be great for you guys. :) :) :) |
It is absolutely true about the link between cancer and early spay. If you spay before her first heat, you will eliminate her risk of ever getting mammary cancer. If you wait until she has one heat, her risk rises to 8%. If you spay after her second heat, her risk of cancer jumps to 25%. |
