7month yorkie diar & soft stool Riley is really my husbands pup.. He's attached to him by apron strings. My husband had to go out of town for a week... We ran out of Rileys regular dog food and my husband gave him some dry Eukanuba..The next day I got his regular food and fed him.. He's had a very soft stool all week, with some diarrhea.. He goes out to potty and after he had a bowel movement I saw him straining to go again... Last night I notice a tiny bit of blood .. I'm hoping it's from him straining.. I gave him some plain white rice last night. This morning his soft stool was green in color.. He's very active, not lethargic at all.. Should I take him to the Vet.? My husband is coming home tomorrow and said I should wait... I don't have thousands of dollars for the vet right now... I read something here about giving the pup canned pumpkin to help with his soft stool ? Is that correct? He ate all the rice yesterday, but this morning just ate a little of it.. He's drinking his water... |
Changing food too fast will cause loose stools. How about adding a little cooked chicken to the rice? My vet also has me give 1/2 tsp. Pepto Bismol to my 9 lb. Pommie when he has one of his many loose stools from eating something he shouldn't have. Also give him 3 days worth of the antibiotic Metro. Wouldn't hurt to check in with your vet. He/she might have some inexpensive way to help you. |
My yorkie got sick when I first got him from change in food. Got diareaha and wouldn't eat or drink. I took him to the vet and it only cost me $150.00 which was well worth it because he got better really fast. He now eats homemade food consisting of roasted chicken, lamb, rice, squash and flax seed. Vet said this would be a great diet for him and it is. He it totally healthy now on this diet. |
Rice and chicken is your best bet for a quick fix with out going to he vet. You could also mix a little bit of his normal food in with it. Small meals more frequently helps too. Has the pup been checked for parasites and worms? Sometimes they will cause loose stools. As long as his energy level is ok and he still wants to eat and drink its most likely ok to wait. |
IMO..you see blood in their stool they need to go to the vet with a stool sample. Your dog could have gardia or a number of other things. |
Thanks everyone My little boy still is having problems.. Now I found more blood in stool this morning. I am taking him into the Vet and I'll let you all know how he is.. On the upside, he's very active, eats all his chicken and rice, so that's a good thing. I am so upset that I didn't bring him in sooner, but I thought it might clear up on it's own.. |
Adding some canned pumpkin will also help his GI tract and clear up any diarrhea. |
