Neutering at 5mths dog 5lbs Hi All, It's been a while!!! I've been BUSY!!!! Kodi has calmed down a lot!!! He no longer charges me or bites like he used to. He is 5mths now and sweet and affectionate as can be! Friends and family have all commented on how much calmer he is, they love him! He's soooo friendly with people, other dogs and even kids! The persistence paid off! The Petsmart classes REALLY HELPED, TRISH THE TRAINER IS WONDERFUL. If you live in the Beaver County Pa. area its worth it at the Monaca Petsmart!!!! I also discoverd that shaking a can or plastic jar of coins stops him in his tracks! which has helped too. He is scheduled to be neutered this Thurs. I am a little nervous as he is only five mths. The vet said he has both testicles and he is weighing in at 5.1 lbs, so I hope he'll be ok. They are going to do the bloodwork and I do trust the Banfield vet I have been seeing for 2 mths. Any thoughts on neutering @ 5 as opposed to 6mths. Thanks, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Everyone, Lisa and Kodi |
I don't know about neutering ages as I have females but the shelter I volunteer at spays and neuters at 3 1/2 months. Which I thought as too young but they seem to do ok. I think he will do fine. |
I have always heard that they can be neutered anytime after both testicles are down. |
Age is okay. A reason to wait is if he hasn't lost his baby teeth, & particularly if he may have baby teeth that can be removed under anesthesia. |
My pup Riley was 6 months old and like the above poster said, pulling the teeth at that time is a great way to alleviate long term teeth issues. My baby had to have 5 teeth pulled. |
Hot Rod was 6 1/2 mos old and had 14 teeth removed. |
Ella was 5 months and 3lbs and did great! :) I am not sure if it is different for males.. I wanted it to be done before she got her first heat. |

I agree 100% I would wait for his baby teeth to be gone and then you know if he needs any teeth pulled and if so then you only need to put your baby under once. :):D:) |
Kodi is neuteren and Spry!!! I did go through with neutering Kodi yesterday and when I brought him home if was as he had been through nothing. He is as spry as ever! I had to keep him in the excercise pen to keep activity level down. He wanted to engage in his usual 5minutes of zoomies and play followed by cuddling. I am having a really hard time keeping him calm. He hasn't even offered to lick the incision. I hesitate to take him outside because he tries to run up the steps and romp and play. Any suggestions on keeping him calm? How long do I have to wait until I can take him for an actual walk? I believe my vet said one week! He'll be expecting his walk this afternoon. Any advice welcome! Lisa and Kodi |
i've heard after 24hrs, light walks are just fine. apparently they just don't want lots of running and jumping around until the sutures are healed. that was the advice my vet gave me after spaying my min pin, who was about 3lbs at the time. needless to say, keeping a min pin's activity level low is next to impossible. :) |
