Hydrostatic High Pressure (HHP) The owner of a little boutique, I frequent, asked me if I would be interested in another raw food that was pathogen free, using the HHP process (Hydrostatic High Pressure)...they actually put the food under enough pressure, that it literally squeezes all the air out of the product, does not alter the products shape taste or nutrion but nothing bad can grow...It's not pasteurized, or iradiated, or treated w/any chemicals, just under hydrostatic high pressure...Just wanted to see if any of you other raw feeders had run across this process and what you thought about it...Of course, I realize, these little canines can deal w/much more bacteria than we give them credit for, but I'm always on a quest for the perfect food for my perfect furkids :D (I can dream, can't I lol) I'm not going to mention the company that does this, because I'm not here promoting the company...I actually use NV & Primal, at the moment, and love it...This did intrigue me...Any feedback would be appreciated...especially from Chrystal, who has always given me great feedback about topics such as this... |
Until there are studies that actually prove that HHP can kill salmonella and e.coli in raw food, I'd be skeptical. I did a quick Google search and found some studies but none pertaining specifically to these bacteria and raw food. I am definitely interested in learning more about this though! |
Of course right after I posted, I found this: High hydrostatic pressure processing can help eliminate food safety problems in meat and poultry | bites This is definitely something to consider. Although I will say that exposure to bacteria is a good thing for our immune systems, and because this bacteria poses no real threat (if the food handled/prepared properly) to the dogs, I might continue to feed regular raw. |

I've started to feed Sushi Stella & Chewy's freeze dried raw meats....he LOVES the food, finishes it as soon as he sees it on his plate....and he's thriving on it. His poop is small and firm and odorless. I do offer dry kibble as well but he prefers the freeze-dried meat. It is expensive but given the smallness of yorkies, 1 patty supplemented with dry kibble is sufficient and more manageable... |

From what I hear, Stella and Chewy's is a great brand! I had no idea it was them that did the HHP. I also love that they use USDA-approved organic meat from antibiotic/hormone free, naturally raised animals. |
Stella and Chewys is a good brand. We like the lamb. It can be fed dry too, just crumble up the patties. Very easy and convenient for traveling or when you need a quick meal and don't have anything defrosted. I also like ZiwiPeak which is really THE top of the line dehydrated raw food. It's expensive but worth it. |

Interesting and something I will look into, but honestly I'm not the one to give an unbiased opinion about anything to do with raw because I don't like it at all... :) |
