Impacted Glands? How do I know if Mya's anal glands are impacted? She has been licking her butt a lot and awhile ago I had the vet show me how to express the glands if for some reason I had do. Well, they felt empty to me as I remember what they were like when they were full but I tried anyway and now I am nervous that I pushed the fluid back in haha I dunno... Basically, she's licking a lot but they seem empty. How do I know if they're impacted? |
My vet told me that the only way to tell if the glands are too full is by internal exam, expressing the glands -- which, in my non-expert opinion, is a risky proposition. The glands can be impacted and ruptured if done wrong. Impacted glands ultimately ulcerate to the outside, around the anus. Does Mya have any red spots or irritation around her anus? My Max's breeder suggested that instead of expressing glands manually, feed green peas or green beans to give more bulk to the stools. Larger stools will express the glands naturally. Usually dogs will scoot if the glands are the problem (or maybe Max did this because he can't reach to lick.:animal36) There are other causes for licking, like general irritation from a little stuff being left behind. Hmm...is this new for her, this symptom? I mean, when you were asking the vet about it before was it bc she was also doing it then? If she was doing it then, and the glands were clogged then, did you try a diet change? If not...are ya open to trying one bc that can sometimes really do the trick if an ingredient is irritating the system and causing the glands to then clog. |

There doesn't seem to be any irritation. I took her in before and just asked routinely how to do it just incase I ever had to on my own. I get scared and don't push too hard because I fear rupturing them, which could be why I never get anything out haha. Anyway, most likely I will make an appointment just out of concern and hopes the vet will express them propery :). |
