Fatty tumor? Something more serious? I was petting Meg before bed last night and noticed that she has a huge lump on the side of her neck. It is really freaking me out, and the vet can't get her in until Monday. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? Dome-shaped No hair loss Not as big as a golf ball, but BIG Soft/squishy feeling, maybe with something harder inside? No pus or discharge No skin discoloration Grew VERY fast... only noticed it last night; has not changed size since then It does not seem to bother her at all and she is eating/playing/breathing normally. A friend had this happen to her schnauzer 10 yrs ago and it was cancer. I'm freaking out. Anyone have any advice? Is this common in Yorkies? I am going to ask the vet to do a biopsy. Edit: She's 14 months old, 4.5 lbs, happy & healthy |
I had a yorkie with a fatty tumor, it was probably the size of a quarter. When the vet removed it, she said it was filled with "black goo." She had never seen anything like it, so she sent it to Texas A&M just to be sure, but it was nothing. I think it was black inside because it was on her back, and just picked up black pigments that are naturally in that area of the body. |
Has you dog had vaccinations lately? I had one who got an abcess at the site after every vaccine |
Has she had her rabies shot in the last few weeks? These will usually cause a lump to form at the injections site. |
Thanks for your replies. Meg hasn't had any recent vaccinations. I did wonder if it could be some long-lingering reaction to a vaccine, but she hasn't had any in over six months. Black goo?! How does that even happen?! I am so anxious as I wait for Monday. Meg is acting completely normal, which is good at least. |

Chip had something like that one time but it was on his side. The vet did a needle biopsy thing and sent it to a lab then confirmed it was nothing. They said it was just a bunch of fatty tissues that bunched up from a vaccine. Has your baby had any vaccines lately? Edit - sorry didn't read the entire thread. I see that you said she hasn't had recent vaccines. Guess I wasn't very helpful! I'm sure it's nothing serious, but I'd be patient and take her to the vet Monday and just make sure she's still eating okay and acting okay. |

Anyone else have experience with something like this? |
Oh man, it's getting bigger. Not by too much, but maybe 1/3 bigger. Monday's vet appt can't come fast enough. |

They can't. The vet is on vacation and gets back on Monday. Because I live in Korea, I can't just find another vet. There are, of course, other vets here, but they all speak Korean. There is one vet I know of who speaks at least a little English, but my concern is that he will start poking/prodding/giving shots and I won't know what he is doing. I almost feel that it's better to leave it alone until I can get to a vet that I can totally communicate with and trust. I'm keeping a careful watch on it though, and going to Mr. Kim is my plan B. Meg still doesn't seem bothered by it, and she is eating normally. She has been a bit more cuddly, but she just came into heat today (fyi - we're on the wait list for a spay) and I think the cuddliness has more to do with that than the lump. |
What if it's an abscess? What happens if it doesn't get drained until Monday? Could it be serious? I will have to look "abscess" up in my vet book. Oh man, now I'm second-guessing waiting until Monday. Maybe I should take her to the Korean vet tomorrow.... |
My zoey has one of these about the size of a golf ball,on her leg. Post a pic and I will tell you if its the type she has or something different. |

If you think it could be an abscess, spend some time putting hot compresses on it. It it is an abscess you should be able to get it to drain that way (and you'll know its not something else if it does that.) Have you tried calling your vet back and mentioning that is growing and you're extremely concerned? I used to keep rats for quite a long time, so I have done the abscess & tumor thing quite a few times. If its just an abscess the worst thing that'll happen between now and monday is it'll get a bit worse and draining it will be a lot more dramatic. (If it is an abscess and fairly large you might end up having to flush it out a bit for a few days after she sees the vet.) I've been in the exact situation you've been in (except with a different species a few times ;)) so if you'd like to PM me and talk about it... please feel free to do so! |
2 Attachment(s) I took two photos, but it's almost impossible to see due to her hair. And call me crazy, but I think it's getting smaller. Dame, I will PM you --- but do you think the abscess could drain into her and cause septic shock? I have been really panicked since I read that last night. I'm going to try the compress and see if that helps. Thanks for all your help and inputs, guys. |
1 Attachment(s) OH MAN --- it looks JUST like this photo I found on Drs. Foster and Smith. This is the exact placement of the lump. Maybe that means she has swollen lymph nodes due to infection or <gulp> cancer. Lymphadenitis, Lymphadenopathy & Swollen Lymph Nodes in Dogs |
Update! Update: Well, Meg's lump has gone down significantly. A woman at Doggie Playgroup looked at it today and immediately thought it was a lymph node thing. She has years of experience with dogs, so she might know what she's talking about. Anyway, Meg's vet appt is tomorrow afternoon, so I'll give you all an update then. (The lump is still there, but very small.) |
Update! UPDATE! Well, Dame hit the nail on the head (she PM'd me and mentioned lymph nodes). The vet confirmed today that her left lymph node is a little swollen. It has gone down A LOT but it still a tiny bit swollen. The vet couldn't say it if was bacterial or not and she wanted to give Meg antibiotics, but I said no. The infection is already nearly gone (due to the size reduction) and I don't want to give Meg antibiotics if she doesn't really need them. I swear, the vet here passes antibiotics out like candy or dog biscuits or something. Anyway, I will go back in a couple days if the swelling isn't completely gone, but... yay! I'm so relieved that it was nothing more serious. THanks for all your help, guys!!! |

I know I panicked when I saw the lump on Chip. It was HUGE! I was scared of cancer or something, but I was confused because he was only like 8 months old or something. I rushed him to the vet and they told me his was most likely from a vaccine, but sent it to the lab for testing just in case it was something else. |
Yah, it was really scary to find a lump on Meg... the vet told me that swollen lymph nodes seem so pronounced on Yorkies jsut because they are so small. So it wasn't even too swollen or a real problem, it just looked it becuase she is so small (5 lbs). |
Im happy to hear it wasnt something more serious! |
Good news is just what I wanted to hear. |
