We may get to stay on NV Instinct after all!! As you may remember, I thought I was going to have to switch from NV Instinct to another food and I was having problems finding a good one that fit all our health needs and my requirements (this is my earlier thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-instinct.html). My main concern was that Maddox, my puppy, was having runny stools on it. But, he seems to be doing just fine for the last 3 days! :cheer::cheer::cheer: Maybe it just took a longer for his little system to adjust to the food change? Anyway, he's doing great on Instinct now. :D My other concern is that I think Tate drinks and pees a lot when I feed him Instinct. The vet thinks it's it may be due to his diet. I'm wondering - could it be because Tate is just so much smaller than my others and with his tiny bladder he has to go more often? :p I'm just not sure how concerned to be on this point. I would love to continue feeding Instinct, but I don't want to do anything that may be bad for Tate in the long run. Can I get your opinions again, please? :) |
Bonny....how old is Tate and how much does she weigh?? Snick is on Acana 33% protein and he has to pee every 5-6 hours. So about 4 times a day. He is 3.5-4lbs and and is 1.5 yrs old. I think that's pretty good for his size. I think he could last 7-8 hours, but we never try to make him hold it that long. Hope this helps:) And hope you can cont Instinct! Holiday Hugs- Snick & Viv |
Have you measures Tate's moisture intake? How much does he weigh? How many ounces does he drink a day? Has he had a urinalysis? Does he get raw at all and how much? |
Tate weighs exactly 4 1/2 pounds & is 11 months today (happy birthday, little man!). I've never measured his moisture intake, I just notice he's at the water bowl more often. But now that I think about it, he usually just has a couple of laps of water where the others will stand there a drink quite a bit at one time. The doctor did a urinalysis and said it was normal (this was several weeks ago & can't remember everything he said but he did say Tate seemed perfectly healthy to him). He hasn't had raw in 3 to 4 weeks. No canned food in that time, either. He was trained right from the start to use the doggie door or puppy pads, so I've never asked him to hold it - he's always been able to just go. |

The general rule is an ounce of water per pound of dog per day. So he should drink somewhere around 4.5 ounces a day when eating only kibble (give or take depending on the dog). So maybe about 1/2 cup. The only way to make sure that he isn't seriously over drinking is to separate the dogs for a day and measure it. If you think he is peeing more than he should, then maybe he is dirnking more than he should. It could be that he is just a thirsty dog, but if he is drinking way too much, some things would have to be considered like diabetes insipidus. |
