Tape worms?? What will the vet do? We think Sadie might have a tapeworm(s). I know they are going to do a fecal sample tonight and see what they can find, but i read that those fecal samples don't always show tape worms. The reason we think it's a worm is that her feces was runny today and had little particles that look like seasame seeds or thicker rice grains. We also have been doing everything we can to feed her to put weight on her to no avail so now i really think it's a worm and she's not getting her nutrients and putting on weight. Anyone had this experience that can give me advice as to how to get this fixed and what the vets will do for her after trying to find a worm? Thanks i'm a bit worried about her. |
ETA: I just did some research and you're right, sometimes the eggs don't show up on a fecal test. It's important to test anyway, just to see if any other worms are present. If you tell them there are little white segments in her poop than they'll probably give you a wormer that kills tapeworms just in case. It's not harmful to her or anything. Yep, sounds like tapeworms. I don't know where you read that a fecal won't show tapeworms but it most definitely should? At least ours did... Franklin had tapeworms as a puppy. It's no big deal at all. I know it seems gross but they just give him a dewormer (either a pill or liquid) and depending on the medicine he'll need either one or multiple doses. They are quite common and super easy to treat. :) She'll be fine. |
It's important to take a fecal sample in for testing. Don't forget that. It does sound like a tapeworm. Seeing small white grains of rice/seeds is a sign I believe. |
During my pup's check-up last Friday, the fecal sample tested positive for tapeworms. The vet gave us a choice of pills vs. an injection. I asked which one worked the best, and he said that the injection did, so that's what we did. She didn't seem to have any side affects from the injection, no big deal really. The best way to prevent tapeworm infestation is to avoid fleas (they get the tapeworm by eating a flea that is infected). My girl must have picked up the tapeworm before I got her, because she definitely doesn't have fleas, nor have I ever seen any on her. I have her on Sentinel, which controls fleas and worms (all the common ones except for tapeworm). |
They will give her a de-wormer and since tapeworms are gotten by ingesting fleas...you should consider using a flea preventative. |
I've had to treat my pups for tapeworms, just one pill, quick and easy. Yes, they come from ingesting fleas. I found them by seeing little white segments on their poo, mostly in the first one in the morning. Also found some dried rice-like particles on their bed. |
so i took her to the vet and they gave me a half a pill and told me to give the other half in a month. it's strong enough to kill any and all worms including tapeworms, round worms, hook worms ext... no eggs did show up in the fecal, but she pooped at the vets and they saw what i was seeing and said yes give her the meds to get rid of them. needless to say she's sleeping in her crate tonight...i'll miss her in my bed. anyways, i also applied her flea and tick stuff tonight, i hadn't been putting in on since it was getting colder outside, but then i forgot that she could get fleas from another dog even in petsmart or something so i put it on to be safe and will continue year round from now on. thanks for the help...hope she gets them out and starts to finally put on some weight now. |

Our tapeworm debacle started the whole debate about our house being infested without our knowledge and him showing no signs () so you may also want to step up your vacuuming routine a bit just to make sure. (Its said to take care of a very large percentage of fleas and won't harm anything.) |
FYI, there are 2 types of tapeworms eand the only med that can get rid them is a dewormer with Praziquantel. However, it doesn't get rid of the eggs so, two doses are required. |
