Weight gain since getting new furbaby Hello Everyone....I have had Pepe since he was 16 weeks old and since turning one years old he stayed at a steady weight of 4.5lbs. 2 weeks ago my husband suprised me with a female yorkie who is about his age they will be both be two in march. The problem is I have been feeding them both the same amount I have always feed him but he now attacks his food and eats every drop right away (he used to pick at it for about an hour) he went from 4.5 to 6lbs in about week. I am worried he feels he has to eat right away because he thinks she will eat it and she has been devouring hers too. Is this normal and will they clam down eventually? |
It sounds like competition to me. Are you sure he's eating only his own food? That seems like an excessive weight gain in such a short period of time. Keep watching them & maybe you'll get more clues. |
Yup just his but I did just find out that my husband fed them before I got home then when I got home they both starting nudging their bowls so I thought they hadn't eaten and I fed them again! he was such a picky eater before its like he had a complete personality change.....lol |
Those two know how to push the buttons, don't they!?!? What I do is measure out Roxy's daily food amount in a cup in am. She gets part of it for morning & the rest later in the day. That way I don't forget to feed her in the evening. If there's food in the cup, she needs to eat. If it's empty I know she's been fed. I usually feed her, but dh has occasionally fed her too. This way I know she's not over eating. Of course, she has no competition. I do this just so I don't forget & do one of those "Did I feed her already, I don't remember" things. (Some days do get kinda crazy!) I just have to be consistant with the morning ritual. |
Thats a good idea! I have had those days where I sit their trying to remember if I fed him already....lol |
Do they have crates? Try feeding them in there. That's what we do with Bandit and Nala because Nala will eat all of her food and Bandit's too, and he'll just let her. Sometimes (when the hubby isn't home) I'll feed Bandit on the couch and Nala on the floor. |
Maybe you can try feeding one of them first and another one an hour later? |
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions...I might try them all out and see what works best...maybe he is eating some of her food too :) |
