Good kibble recommendation?? Our 9 month old, 4 lb yorkie has been on Blue Buffalo Chicken since the day he was weaned. The problem is, he doesn't like it anymore. We have to hand feed him if we want him to eat. And even then he'll eat just a little and not want it anymore. We went to a pet store today and got some samples of Taste of the Wild, Candidae, Evangers and Diamond. We had success with Taste of the Wild (fowl formula) and Diamond. Trouble is, we looked it up on YT and found out they have that fish meal preservative that is hazardous to their health. :(. So we're back to not having a good kibble that he likes. Does anyone have a good kibble recommendation?? We'd like it to be nutritious and tasty (and not to have that fish meal preservative in it). If you have a good kibble that your picky eaters have loved, please share. Thanks! |

I would suggest taking a walk around your local pet stores and note what they have - then find the companies on the web and ask for samples! Most of the them will give you some, those that don't produce them will point out that 99% of them can be returned to your local store if you buy it and it doesn't work out. If you don't mind web ordering there are a ton of other companies, and I would suggest browsing the sample thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...e-samples.html Personally, Fromm is one of my recommended brands (no ethoxyquin & human grade) but there are a lot of other good companies out there too. Have you considered switching the Blue Buffalo flavor? Considering its what you used to feed (and is a decent food) perhaps switching to the turkey or another formula might just do the trick and shouldn't involve any tummy distress. |
My Nick is a picky eater, too. When I got him from the breeder he was on Pro Plan. We decided to switch and so began the great hunt for kibble... I tried a gazillion samples before we decided to go with Innova. Both Nick and Daisy (she will eat anything, though) LOVE it. Most of the good brands do offer samples. I emailed some and got samples in the mail. Others, like innova and Canidae (they use the fish stuff :() I got from a local feed store. The ones that sent me samples in the mail were Wellness, Solid Gold, and Natural Balance. It took us forever but we finally found a nutritious food that Nick likes. Good luck! |
Jackson is *so* picky. It took me almost a year to find him a food he enjoys & likes. Nature's Variety Instinct is by far his favorite and longest lasting food, LOL. He hasn't tired of it yet and it's been 2 months (maybe more?) His favorite is the Turkey & Duck flavor and they don't use ethoxyquin. He did well on Merrick's Before Grain, too but didn't love it as much as NV. The good thing about BG is you can buy 1.1lb bags in the store for cheap so you're not wasting money or food to try it out. |
Try Merrick. They have a puppy stage, however all there food can be used for all stages. You can also add a little warm water to it and it makes a gravy. My Sophie loves it and we make the gravy as a treat every now and then. They don't have free samples but they sell a 1lb bag for $1.99. They also make great treats like flossies and texas taffy. Hope you find something good. |
I feed Life's Abundance to both my puppies and they love it. I order it from Breny here YT. or here is the link. Greens Treasured Yorkshire Terriers and Biewers - Healthy Pet Food I can also send you a small sample, pm me if you are interested. Linda |
thanks thanks for all of the great recommendations. I actually went through that list of dog food suppliers who give free samples and emailed EVERYONE a few days ago. Only one emailed back to say that they were going to send them to us. All the others either have not replied back or said to go to the pet store for a sample. I think we'll try a few more pet stores today. |
We're also considering Royal Canin. Is this a good kibble? Has anyone had picky eaters who liked it? Also, of the kibble that you recommend, is there a good one that is healthy, tasty and that helps with giving less eye gunk? Thanks. |
My little boy is a very picky eater also. But he loves Merricks before grain in chicken flavor. |
My baby boy Ares (2months) eats Earthborn puppy, but he loves to sneek eukanuba (the one with the pic of the boxer)! lol my boxer Tank (1year) will share with Ares (being God of War he better *giggles*) but I snatch him up and move him back to his food. lol |
Max and Mickey like Nature's Variety Prairie Lamb & Oatmeal flavor. |
I have never tried Royal Canin but have not heard good things about it. I think it has some questionable ingredients in it. Plus, it is REALLY expensive. Nick had horrible eye gunk when he was on Nutro and Pro Plan. I started adding apple cider vinegar to his water and switched him to Innova Puppy a few months ago and it is better. Not gone but def. better. I think the only companies that sent me samples via mail were Solid Gold, Welless and Natural Balance. Visiting a feed store would be your best bet. Several in my area carry a bunch of samples. |
My picky eater changed his ways when I gave him Timberwolf Organics. Since then, he's been a great eater. I currently have them on Innova and Wellness. Sometimes you have to try several brands before one clicks. :) |
Acana, Orijen, or Innova:) Good luck!! Snick & Viv |
