Should I supplement?
 
I am in the process of switching Max from Royal Canine to Natures Variety, and at the same time switching Sophie from Eukanuba to NV as well. On the package (NV) says "All Stages",so I assumed it was fine for a 13 week old.Now I started to wonder if I made the right decision. Is this correct, or should I add supplement her food with something else? :confused:

I feed mine the RC #28 for the adults and #33 for the puppies under 10 months. the numbers correspond to the amount of protein.

I think growing puppies need more protein. But that is JMO.

well- all stages ARE for all stages- I've read conflicting articles on whether puppies need a specific food or not- i'm interested to hear what others have to say.

So am I, I hope I did not make the wrong decision. NV is the only one Max eats other than RC, Sophie on the other hand, is a vacuum cleaner, she would eat what ever you throw at her.:p

Here's my thinking. Nature's Variety is a very high quality food- if they thought a puppy food was needed- they'd make a puppy food. Same thing with raw- if raw manufactures thought a puppy food was needed- one would exist.

here is what it says on the Natural Balance website

Natural Balance® Ultra Premium Dog Food is made for All Life Stages and provides premium nutrition for every stage of life. In Nature, your pets would not have the choice of puppy formulas, nor lighter formulas for their senior years; they would simply live on a diet of mostly meat and and some grain. In a natural free environment, animals instinctively eat more or less, depending on their age and activity level.

I think they are a high quality food too- and what they say makes sense. Sometimes I think some of these "special foods" are more marketing- but i don't know that to be true for puppy formula

Thanks Marci. I don't remember worrying this much for everything when I first got Max.

Girls are different :) And maybe your knowledge has expanded :) Does it give feeding guidelines on the back of the bag for her age?

I know you know- but remember to go REALY slow with her- she is going from some not so great food to a high quality food- she will have a bit of detoxing and at 13 weeks she is tiny- so just go really slow :)

It probably does, but I haven't checked the bag. I always serve Max with a small plastic container I have, that is what he eats during the day, so I now serve them both the same amount, one measuring cup for each.After Sophie is done with her plate she goes to Max's, ...well it really goes the other way around, she has made Max's plate her own. He does not eat much, and neebles during the day. She eats a lot more than he did at that age. I remember the vet said, puppies should eat 3 time a day, but since I free fed, there is always food available to them.

LOL, the first day she got home, she went straight to Max's plate, and eat everything, I was getting the pumpkin, chicken and rice ready, I was sure she would have the "runs", but she didn't> I never served the Eukanuba to her again, the breeder had giving me a bag for her, but I guess I'll be donating it to our local shelter. Max has a very sensitive stomach, it is taking me much longer t switch him, but he is doing fine..so far.
