Itching and biting My 5 year old Reggie has been licking and biting himself a lot recently. Its a lot of itching his lower back and biting his paws. I know that everyone will say its a food allergy, but I have had him on the same exact food for at least 3 years now. Its an organic formula and he loves it. As soon as we put on his inflatable e-collar to stop from itching he is totally fine which makes me think it might be behavioral. We keep it on him all the time and he even falls asleep in our bed with it on. Then when my husband takes it off in the middle of the night, he starts his itching and crying, and I hve to put it back on and spray some aloe vera on him for him to fall asleep again. I am starting to get really worried. Before I was convinced it was behavioral and now I am nervous and unsure. Please help if you have experienced the same! =/ PS during the summer he has dry itchy skin and he takes temiral for it. I have been giving him half a pill twice a day which seems to help some, but not enough! |
it could also be partly from stress...my Joey chews the hair off his back legs and flanks from stress. we use bitter spray, and the hair is finally growing back! I think after a while it just becomes habit, and he does it without thinking... |
aw, the poor baby. Have you changed ANYTHING? Room spray, furniture spray, cleaning products for the hard floors? You could try Benedril. Poor baby must be miserable.:( |
If the Temaril-P is helping at all, then allergies could be the cause. Food allergies make up about 10% of all cases. The others are flea and environmental. Since he has problems in the summer, environmental wouldn't be surprising. Are you sure he is flea free tough? And dogs can develop food allergies over time if they are constantly exposed to the same ingredients. So that wouldn't be surprising either. How is his skin looking? What does the vet say? The problem with using an e-collar that it isn't fixing the problem and he could be miserably itchy with it on. If the vet says it's allergies and fleas aren't a problem, then you could try an elimination diet, shampoos, steroid injections, or Atopica depending on what your vet thinks. |
I havent changed any products or his shampoo. He was on organic foods and I just changed that to the allergy formula, but he doesnt seem to like it much as he isnt eating it. It could be he is isnt eating because of his itching and biting. I just looked at his thighs where he does a lot of itching and licking and its not irritated. The only place he is extremely red is by whre he got neutered. That same exact spot is very red and its the only place. |
