Thor is going bald! Hi, everyone. I have been super-busy at work and haven't been posting here recently. I also haven't been taking Thor out very much. He goes to doggy daycare 2x / week, and I play with him inside, but I haven't been taking him out running in the park for an hour 5x / week, the way he is used to. I noticed over the past few weeks that he is scratching like crazy, especially on one side. It got to the point where I was brushing out matts 1 or 2 x/day. He doesn't have any visible pests, and there's been no change in his diet. He has been getting treats at doggy daycare, but I checked that they don't contain corn, and they are a nice, healthy brand, the same kind used at my rescue (name is escaping me). The daycare lady also said that Thor is not scratching at daycare, which suggests it's a nervous habit. Anyway, I was brushing him last night, and he's scratched out a huge patch of hair on his right side! It looks terrible, like a comb over for dogs. :( Basically, I think I need to make a bigger effort to get him out and about, but I wanted to check that this isn't a sign of some horrible disease. Has anyone heard of this? Thanks in advance. :( |
Hi QuickSilver!! It is so good to hear from you! Sorry to hear about Thor losing hair. Poor baby. Sorry I wish I could be of more help but I don't have any experience with this. Maybe some kind of odd allergy.? I hope this will be short lived. I hope he is otherwise in good health. |
He needs to see the vet so they can look at his skin, make sure there is nothing going on in the area, probably have skin testing (like cytology) done, and run blood work. Sometimes things become less of an issue for dogs when they are away from home (vet, daycare), sine there are more important things to think about for them. But there could still be a problem. |
OMG Thor! I haven't heard from you in a while and now you are in pain! oh no! I don't know what to say, but maybe, use a oatmeal sponge on bathtime? |

I agree...there could be something going on there, something he picked up, esp. since he goes to daycare. He may not scratch at daycare bc he's having fun and/or is nice and distracted by all the activity. He also could be having seasonal/enviro allergies...doubt it's food related. Does he wear clothes and stuff? Any new clothes or harnesses that you forgot to wash or anything weird like that? Sometimes new clothes come w/ chemicals on them. Just a thought... |
Poor little Thor :( I hope his itchies go away soon and it doesn't turn out to be any thing to difficult to deal with. Hugs to Thor! |
I wondered where you had been....please don't stay away so long...:D:p:D Boy this is one of those things that could because of a lot of reasons..I have one right now that is doing the same thing. I am slowly going through a number of things but soon it might have to be a visit to the vet for tests. |
I agree with everyone, I would take him in for bloodwork. Is the Bald spot near his ear? Wondering if he has an ear infection. Keep us updated. |
I too have been wondering where you have been. Just hate this is the kind of post you have to make your "comeback" with:rolleyes: I don't have any ideas, but I hope you get to the bottom of Thor's problem soon. |
