low protein diet My Benji is 14 & half years,& has now been diagnosed with kidney problems & vet has told us to feed him on a low protein food. I tried him on the prescription dog foods but he does not seem to like them for very long. He has always been a very fussy eater. He will eat spaghetti with chicken pieces in it but gets fed up of this also. If i feed him the burns kibble which my young 6 month old yorkie is having, he simply eats it after its been down for 24 hours or more or as a last resort. I dont like doing this as he begins to lose weight & gets thinner! would welcome any suggestions! |
did you try rice with cottage cheese? otherwise pasta with some hard boiled eggs... |
Natural Balance has some really lower protein foods you could check out. You could buy the wet food to go along with the dry and mix in it, most dogs like that. |

I just switched Bailey to the homemade low protein diet from the University of Tennessee website: Portosystemic Shunts FAQ (look for the link on the lower left hand side to see the recipe) My little guy was a bit of a picky eater and he loves this stuff. He is 3lbs 11 oz and when I make this up it will last about 5 days or so. I feed him almost 2 oz of this twice a day. Our vet suggested a low protein diet after high liver enzymes from a blood test. We told him about this diet and he liked it. I've been thinking about starting a thread to see if anyone else on YT uses this diet. Best of luck with Benji. |
What percentage of protein did your vet advise feeding him? Here are a couple of high quality, low protein foods: This one is 18% protein: Solid Gold Health Products for Pets - Products This one is 17% protein: WELLNESSŪ - Healthy Dog and Cat Food |
Thanks for the information on these two other dog foods. My vet was going to suggest the Prescription Diet L/D that he sells. Just looked it up on line and it is listed as 18.1% protein (dry matter). We are going to re-test Bailey's blood in a month and see if a change in diet has changed anything (I was feeding him Orijen). Depending on that outcome I will now have 2 more options for dog food. Thank you. |
