Allergies and Special Diets Hello everyone. I know there is a lot of discussion about allergies AND foods, but I still have a question. My Vet has recommended a Potato and Duck diet for my Lacie, 10 mos. and Kimber, 4 1/2 mos. Both suffer from allergies, and Kimber has been struggling with diarrhea for over a month (other causes have been ruled out). They are currently eating Wellness Puppy. The Vet recommended Royal Canin, but I am happier with the rating on Natural Balance Potato and Duck. Still, I worry that there is enough meat and protein for my puppies. Other foods (such as Fromm) that contain more meat also contain rice and oatmeal, and I'm trying to avoid grains. Any thoughts? Should I add meat to their diet myself? Since I'm avoiding beef and chicken, what would I give them? Is there a supplement that doesn't contain beef, chicken, grains or dairy products that would help? Thanks for any suggestions. This forum has been so helpful to me with my Yorkies! |
Did the vet do allergy testing? Both are really way to young to have food allergies. What symptoms are they having? |
FYI, When I was experimenting with foods, Wellness GAVE Remy diarrhea. We got him off of that food very quickly. It may have a good reputation, but it still may not agree with every pup, based on my experience |
In my opinion, I don't feel NB Duck & Potato has enough meat. It also seems very dry compared to other kibbles and Snick would not touch it when I tried it ages back. Other kibbles seemed to smeel and look more meaty with more dense kibbles and more oily. California Natural by Natura is also a great low ingredient kibble but it has grains. Many higher protein kibble is grain free. Fromm has a Surf and Turf which is Fish based, can they have fish? Acana has a grasslands formula which is lamb based. I'm surprised the vet specified exactly duck and potato. They do seem young to have allergies determined. Good luck:) -Snick & Viv |
Thanks for the replies. We have not done allergy testing. The Vet is basing his recommendation on symptoms, and having ruled out other causes. It's a trial. Lacie does a lot of scratching and biting, and takes an antihistamine and/or cough medicine as needed (cough was in the spring). No fleas on either of them. I use a gentle oatmeal shampoo. Kimber is scratching as well, but has the loose stools. She has been treated for parasites, even though there was no evidence of any. Two weeks on Flagyl has improved the stools, but they are still not normal. I wonder about the Wellness food, too, now that you mention it. Kimber was on Iams when I got her and was not having problems. I discovered a Wellness treat I was using caused both of them to have diarrhea. Since they both appear to be at least sensitive to foods, if not allergic, I am willing to try changing both of their diets, even though he only recommended it for Kimber. If it works for them (and Kimber's stools are already improved after 2 days of 1 part new food/2 parts old food), I'll be thrilled and relieved, but I still worry about adequate nutrition for puppies. |
Hmmm. What do you think of this? If the NB straightens them out, could I add one of the other brands with more meat, even though they have grains, and see how they do?? |

Did you know that inhaled/environmental allergies are far more common that food allergies? Dogs can be allergic to grasses, trees, laundry detergents, etc. just like we are. I'd bet that is what you dogs are experiencing. Adding fatty acids/fish oil can boost their immune system and really help with allergies. Thanks! I'll look into that. |
