Starting Raw food, need help This morning I gave my girls their 1st experience with Raw. Using Nature's Variety - the chicken. Lola love it ate it right up - 2 medallions/ Lily, turned up her nose and walked away. I feed them out of 2 separate bowls. I then mixed it with kibble and separated the 2 of them. When I returned, Lola had squeezed thru the separation and the food was gone. I suspect it was Lola who ate it and not Lily. Any suggestions? Oh, later I gave them the raw chicken foot and again Lola ate hers. Lily only wanted to run to the sofa and hid hers in the cushions. |
I can't even imagine any dog not eating raw? However, I haven't tried the chicken pieces, etc., just the frozen raw medallions....I tried every kibble on the planet, and Apple turned her nose up at all of them...The first time I gave her raw, she did a couple of sniffs, and then woofed it down...Now she dances for her food...Did you cut the medallion up in very small pieces...Believe it or not, I can cut up a one ounce medallion into 8 or 10 little bites...Btw, I thaw two medallions out in a plastic bag in the fridge overnight, then I put her little meal on a plate, cut up, and put it under a really hot light under the kitchen cabinet to take the "cool" off of it...She stands there whining 'till she gets her food...The only other food she gets, is a few little steamed carrot circles or a steamed green bean cut up (potty treats lol)She weighs 5 lbs, so she only get one medallion in the a.m. and one in the p.m. :(...She really feels she's not getting enough, but she is ....Let us know how it's going.... |

I didn't cut them up and they were cold. Lola didn't seem to mind tho. I sort of broke them aprt with my fingers. I am thinking of cooking some rice and mixing it with that. Maybe a liitle heat from the rice will warm the medallion. It doesn't seem like 1 would be enough. My 3lb'er ate 2 and then some. How many times do you feed per day? My girls are still puppies so they are on 3 times a day. Thanks |

Yorkie bladder stones. Introducted RAW food today but wo't eat. Hi there, Please help! I have a 5.6 lb yorkie, 5 years old. He had about 3 seziures in his life time (others possibly that i have not been present for), the sezuires were very mild although i was concerned so i brought him to the vet. He has always been a picky, small eater. Loves treats and table food though, but not dog food??? My yorkie has been diagnosed with bladder stones, mostly likely calcium oxalate. The ones that require surgery. He is also a bit underweight. So before the surgery vet said to get wieght up. He is on Hills medical preventative which he did eat but now has seemed to turn his nose away from. We got this little guy tested for liver shunts, bile acids, mildy elevated but not out of the morn something like int he 30s. Did the whole thing costing me over $2000.00 with all testing and bladder bacterial testing. All came back, healthy liver, no shunts and no bacteria, simply a bladder stone. So now that it has been 2 months since being diagnosed, his weight has not gone up from his 5.6 lbs. I bought raw food patties and introduced it this morning. I first cooked a portion up to 75% and he didnt like it. Then i took the same portion andother piece fresh and gave it to him raw did not like it. What do i do! This little guy needs to gain weight and i am afraid he will get sick. |

It might be helpful for you to start a new thread so that others can more easily see it. Sometimes it takes a little coaxing for them to eat raw. Some dogs take to it right away and other think you are crazy! Try sprinkling a little parmesan cheese on it or maybe mixing it with yogurt or canned pumpkin. Whatever you do, don't cook it. That destroys the entire purpose of feeding raw. If you want to heat a pan really hot and sear the outside just to entice him, that might be okay the first couple of times but since you said he wouldn't eat the cooked portion, I'm not sure if that would help. To be honest I would just put down his food for 30 minutes and then put it back in the refrigerator if he doesn't eat it. He will eventually be hungry enough to eat it. Some picky dogs think if they hold out you'll eventually give them what they want. I'm not sure if there would be any concern about hypoglycemia though since you said he was small and also underweight. Hopefully some other users will have some suggestions for you. |
Thank you very much for your insight. I am not sure what to do either, but i am very frustrated so i will definitely hold tight and be tough. if he gets hungry enough he has to eat. what if he doesnt eat for a few days? he is a small dog and underweight so i wouldnt think starving him would be good for his health. i have tried parmasean cheese before not on raw but other foods and he might just lick it or just sniff and walk away. although he loves people food. i will try the pumkin when i get home. maybe a nice long walk in the park will spark up his appetite. thanks again. if anyone has any other concerns or expertise please help. |
