Sensitive Tummy?
 
Izzy is 3 years old and is ALWAYS throwing up his food. I cannot figure out if it is the food or is it just something wrong with his system. There is no rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes he will throw up right after he eats. Other times it will take a while before his body rejects it. Then there are times where he wont throw up at all. What gives?:(

My carpet cannot take it anymore! Any ideas on what it could be? I am feeding him Newman's Own Organic and he has been eating this for about a yr and a 1/2. Please help. If I do change his food, what do you think is a good one to switch it to?

Sounds like ibd and he is allergic to chicken as many ibd and allergy dogs cannot tolerate chicken. You may want to try natural balance venison and sweet potato. I have an ibd dog and he is on purina ha. You want to get it under control as it can lead to pancreatitis if it is inflammation in the small intestines which it sounds like it is. What happens is it backs up the small intestines gets inflamed and back up it comes. They can eat a food for years and get and intolerance for it. I feed my other dog my maltese newmans own organic and usually dogs with ibd do good on grains so i really think it is the chicken that your dog is having an intolerance to

Oh wow...that makes sense then. Thank you for the advice. I will definitely look into changing his food. I just read some info on Inflammatory Bowel Disease, I am going to take him to the vet for a check up. Poor baby...I feel bad that I've been letting this happen. I just thought he was eating too fast or eating too much, but it has gotten worse over the past few weeks.

also dogs with ibd need to have smaller meals to help them digest easier - does your dog gulp food down? I would feed 3 times a day and measure out food and you feed 1/2 of what food says as they always want to over feed dogs to make more money per our vet so half of what the bag says is what you should be feeding then play with it depending on if dog is over weight or under weight

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in Dogs

the vet really cannot help as this is food elimination trial and error there is no test for this disease but scoping and i would never do that as there are risks in doing that and not necessary

our internal medicine specialist said dogs with ibd tend to test high on amylase and lipase and on the spec cpli with no symptoms of pancreatitis at the time testing high so that would be only indicator on blood work but i would not put your dog through that.

are you sure no blockage ?

Yes, he does gulp it down. Right now I'm feeding him twice a day...1/4 cup each feeding. He's about 6lbs. You know its funny because sometimes he will eat three times a day. Like in the morning, he will eat 1/2 of it then later eat the rest. I guess he's trying to tell me something!:rolleyes:

okay...do you mean blockage as far as his bowels?

yeah mine eat fast too but think it is food related and that is what i feed my 6lb girl so you are good there. Does he eat real fast then burp or anything like that ? you may want to make him slow down by doing smaller portions at each feeding but i really think it is tied to chicken as ims told us ibd dogs cannot tolerate chicken although mine can so it is hit or miss with these sensitive guys. Are you feeding anything else but kibble?

yes do you think he ate something and has a blockage in his intestines like from a toy or something? You may want to just be safe have an xray done just to be sure if he is a chewer - i would not do a barium swallow though xray should show if any blockage but only if you think he chewed off something as they can have something stuck and vomit occassionally with that

yes, he gulps it down then burps...lol I will definitely try smaller portions. Other than kibble, I give him treats: Buddy Biscuits, the soft ones and these Whole Foods treats (not sure what is in them...could be another problem)

I don't think so but it wouldn't hurt to check. He has chew toys but I havent seen him chew anything off.

i would stop all treats and treat with kibble get back to basics when they are sick so you can figure out what is causing this as it could be the treats so first cut out all treats then if he is still doing this switch food go slowly and see what is causing this. It cannot hurt to rule out blockage and get a quick xray as one of mine is a spaz and she did fine getting an xray without sedation- if your vet is good they will be able to xray without sedation

i am having a similar problem
ava got really sick yesterday and i had to take her to the hospital; she was vomiting a lot with blood in it; they did blood test and her amylase enzymes was high; her white blood cell counts was low and i believe her platelets was low too; i dont have the papers with me; i will get them today when i pick her up from the hospital. she was diagnosed with pancreatitis because of the amylase high levels. so now i dont know if she has both gastritis and pancreatitis. anyway i spoke to the vet today; ava is on IV fluilds and they will prescribe presciption diet for pancreatitis; i am assuming royal canin which can have meal and by products so i am not sure what to do;
i had ava on the honest kitchen which is a pretty good food; but sometimes when she doesnt eat breakfast i give her baby food; and maybe that's what triggered the pancreatitis.
so what should i do about the RX diet royal canin; what if she doesnt eat it; she's very picky eater. any suggestions?

did they do spec cpli test as that is the most accurate for pancreatitis and some vets have spec cpli in house so ask them about this. The white blood cell count is high with pancreatitis not low. Not sure on platelets but amylase and lipase are both usually high with pancreatitis. What was the fat content on the food you were feeding- my dog had pancreatitis and it is very serious :(
