Bully Stick Question So I bought Sophie her first bully stick today (a Merrick one)!! And she LOVES it!!! She actually took it and hid under the couch with it before taking it to her crate and bed! LOL Anyway, I was noticing how it was dissolving/getting soft already where she chewed and that of course makes me a bit paranoid as far as bacteria is concerned. Also, of course we cant get every last bit of cat hair up from our 3 cats either so I know that the end will get some cat hair on it. Anyway, back to my question!! Can you rinse these off and put them in a plastic container/bag and store in the fridge or freezer until the next time I let her have it? Also, if I were to buy several could they also be frozen or refrigerated until I get ready to use them? I know I've seen this topic about putting them in the fridge on here but I can't find it again! Any suggestions would be nice! |
check out westbrookdog.com I ordered from westbrookdog.com in the past and these bully sticks truly are the best http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ly-sticks.html |

We have 3 yorkies...so we have to do things in 3's...we usually buy 6 or 9 bully's...as long as you don't open the package of the individual bully it will keep a year...if it's in a package you should just put them in a plastic bag and refrigerate them..ours don't stay around long enough to get too nasty. We have had yorkies for over 16 years and swear by bully's..if you know someone who has dogs you can buy some together and split the shipping. We get ours at K-9 Cuisine...they have free shipping over $50...we add them to our food order and don't pay shipping. We get their treats there too...the yorks love Buddy Biscuits..hope this helps..if you have any questions just pm me or go to my blog "Waterside Yorkies" and email me...if you order anything from K-9 Cuisine use my discount code 'WS-YORKIE" and get 10% off your orders, plus the free shipping...it's a fun site to look at..check them out...have fun with the bully's and your Yorkies. |
Thanks for the info on where I can buy some more sticks and other treats; I'll definitley be checking that out!, but that still doesn't really answer my original questions. Just in case I've confused anyone by my rambling (I tend to do that!) here are my questions again: Can you rinse bully sticks off after they have been chewed on and put them in a plastic container/bag and store in the fridge or freezer until the next time I let her have it? Also, if I were to buy several could they also be frozen or refrigerated until I get ready to use them? |

So, it's unsafe to just let them chew on them, put them on a shelf and chew again the next day??? New to this too! |
I wouldn't want anyone to do what I do, and then something happen to thier baby, but I don't refrigerate Apple's (merricks) bully sticks...Since she has a tiny mouth w/tiny teeth, she takes about 4-6 weeks to finish a 6" stick (she weighs 5 lbs.)...It just hangs around the living room/dining room/kitchen and hall w/all her other toys...The floors are either wood or tile (no carpet)...When it gets to about 2" or so, I toss it, and buy her another one...I aso buy 12" sticks from the holistic kennel, locally, (don't know what brand they are) and they're all over the place too...She does prefer Merricks 'though... |
We agree with the longer sticks...the 6" ones don't last long...even Tinkerbell at 3 lbs can wolf one down in hours..the longer ones can be shared by all three Yorkies..they seem to like sharing it and fighting over it too. We rinse it if it gets fuzzy, but we don't sterilize it like a operating room..we just let them have it back. But do what you feel is right, and have researched...everyone has a opinion...it's up to you as their owner to do what you feel is best. Hey some people think it's silly that we dress our Yorkies..can't help it if they have no sense of humor...we like it and the dogs do too. |
I rinse them off and put them in an airtight container in the fridge. Haven't had any issues. If the end gets really nasty, I will cut it off before storing it. :) |
Thanks for all the replies, everyone! I figured rinsing it and letting it dry would be fine. I'm going to start putting them in an airtight container, too. I had wrapped the current one in a paper towel after rinsing and then put it in the fridge. I was surprised to hear from the lady I bought these from (I asked her about it on facebook) and she said to not put them in the fridge and just wrap them in a paper towel and they'd be fine. I guess I feel better rinsing them since we have 3 cats and noticed some cat hair on the end she chewed. I guess I didn't vaccuum as well as I thought!:p Thanks again for the advice. I'm going to continue to rinse and refrigerate them after hearing that it seems to be ok. I trust you all on here more than I do the lady at the store;). I just hesitate to leave it out with the cats in case they think they can carry it off and do who knows what to it! So I think rinsing and refrigerating or freezing is the best option. |

I also do not rinse or refridgerate. I give Bonnie her bully and if it lasts 2 days or 2 weeks, it just stays around, where ever she leaves it. I also just put the 10 or 20 I buy at one time in a zip lock bag in the pantry til she eats them. If I bought 6 months worth at a time, I might freeze them. |
