HELP! 10mnth old is shivering after days of first groom!

My little 10 month old Yoshi went to his first groom on Tuesday, he spent the whole day there (from 8:30AM to 3:30PM) When I went to pick him up, they had shaved all his hair off (I agreed to because his hair was all matted and I thought it's summer here now anyways so it'd be good for him), I was really happy with the groom. The groomer said he was a bit fidgety at first, but he got the idea and after a while he was very good.

When we got home, he just kept rolling around on our beds for a while, and then he was acting completely normal after wards when my parents got home from work. He was eating, drinking and playing.

The next day (Wednesday), my mum said she found his vomit behind our couch, she thinks it must of been the car ride the day before to and from the vet (he still gets car sick). I agreed.

Last night (Wednesday night) I got up to make a midnight snack, he heard me in the kitchen so he came to be nosy, he looked at me started shivering extremely. I just thought he must of been tried because I notice he shivers a lot when he's really tired or hasn't had enough sleep. My mum said he hadn't slept much in the day time of Wednesday.

I kept him in my bed, and when he finally wanted to sleep he would curl up and shiver every time he breathed in. I knew he wasn't dreaming because he would move around a lot too. And continue to shiver immediately. I tried to comfort him and wrap him with a warm blanket and try give him as much body heat, he'd stay still for a while then he'd start moving away towards the end of the bed and shiver down there.

Later on I fell asleep and he got up the next morning when he heard my parents getting ready for work. We put his little jacket on him, but now he was still shivering while he was awake too. I now know he's had plenty of sleep, but it was still too early for me to get up so I went back to sleep and he came to sleep next to me after my parents left, so I wrapped my blanket around him and he would stop shivering for a wee while, then start up again every time he moved positions.

When we both finally got up, I fed him to see if he would eat and he did, but he would just walk around with his head dipped low and his tail half way above the ground and he would just sit there. So I tested him to see if he was up to play so I would tag him and he would be himself again, alert and all with his tail wagging away.

I have read a lot of forums and I do agree he's probably a little shocked from the lost of all his hair or is in shock from what happened at the groomers. Cos I know he HATES the hair dryer or any loud noises.

But why is he acting up days after the groom? And how long is this going to take? Is there anything I can do to make him stop feeling like this or just help him in anyway in general???

Right now he's asleep on the ground, curled up next to my chair and I can still see his shivers every time he breathes in.

Oh and I've checked everywhere and he hasn't got any burnt marks or cuts on his body EXCEPT for a really small little dry burnt cut on his right ear which he doesn't take much notice of when I touch it.

Please help!!! :( :( :( :(

What a beautiful boy! I hope he feels better soon.

Aww he is such a cutie! Does he usually stay that long at the groomers? That's a really long time if he's not used to it. I've only taken mine to the groomers a couple times each - when they were matted and had to be shaved. I do think they get a little upset about it. Both of mine acted violated afterwards. I'm not sure what to say except keep an eye on him and if it continues - maybe you should call the vet - better to be safe than sorry. I hope he feels better soon. Oh, and just keep giving him lots of TLC. :)

Well, this is all I can think of...

First off, you should never ever ever leave your dog at the Groomers. I wont leave Roxy anywhere that I cant watch them groom her. Especially for a first grooming. Some dogs tend to be very attached and they like to see their owners in their sight. Some places will tell you that thats not a good idea, but if they do, leave.

I worked at PetSmart, and let me tell you, the way I saw ppl mistreat animals in the back appauled me. I saw girls who were so sincere and sweet to the owners go back and throw the dogs in crates, pull them by their leashes, drag them across floors...
(I spent most of my time in the back doing the work and offering to do things for ppl because I knew how they would treat them.)

I will not go ANYWHERE that will not let me watch my dog get groomed... and I will by NO MEANS let them have her for over an hour. She is 3lbs, and isnt long groom at all.

Second off, when these ppl groom, sometimes they dont care if your dog digests shampoo and stuff, and if your dog ends up thrashing, chances are they can take in a good amount of that shampoo or other things or chemicals theyre putting on them... mixed with that and the nervousness, this can make your dogs belly very sick, and can even be very unhealthy for them depending on the chemicals.

Lastly, are you sure that it isnt something that your dog may have accidentally digested? If he is throwing up and shaking, it could be he got ahold of something.

You might never know... but I would really look into a Groomer who is a small independent groomer, and not a big company (ie. PetSmart, PetCo, etc.)

I go to a woman at a place called Cuddly Canine. She runs the place out of her house (she kinda reminds me of Sarah Palin). She was extremely sweet and only does so many dogs a day and is very one on one. She has Roxy for now more than 45 minutes, and she has no problem with me being there if I want.

I also know that Roxy loves her because Roxy doesnt enjoy being anywhere without me, but when we go there, she is excited to see the groomer, so I know Roxy likes her a lot.

I will never go to anybody else.

Plus, she only charges me $22 and not only does she wash and cut, but she trims nails, cleans ears, brushes teeth and we always get a free bow. She is ideal. PetCo & PetSmart charge almost $40 for a dog like Roxy... so since she is so great, I always give her a good tip... She is wonderful, I cant say enough about her.
:)

I hope Yoshi is better today. If not I would take him to your vet. Could be his tummy is hurting and he needs a vet to check him out.

How is he eating and drinking today? Any more vomit? If he is not doing better I would take him to the vet. He could be sick.

jeanm1963 11-12-2009 06:39 AM

shaking is usually a sign of pain...you should take him to the vet

poor guy; he was there for 7 hrs; he must have gotten stressed out and probably caught something; maybe a cold; please take him to the vet; and don't leave him at the groomer for that long; i left mine once for 3 hrs and when i came to pick her up she was left under the dryer for 3 hrs and they forgot about her; after that she was constantly sick and was never the same. so now i trim her hair myself; it just takes time and patience; and i do it because i love her and i dont want her to get hurt or sick; once in a while i take her to the vet or a groomer for nail trim and ear hair removal; but i wait there with her like 10 minutes. good luck

Thank you all so much for your replies.

He is doing a lot better today, he's still eating, drinking and playing.

I went out last night and while I was getting ready he started whining, even though my parents were home and they were calling out to him, he just kept sitting between my legs and whining.

I think he was just scared that I was going to leave him again.

Today I've only seen him shiver once when I was in the bathroom once again and he was at the top of our stairs looking and thinking that I was about to go out but I wasn't.

He is acting a lot more himself now.

I will never leave him at the groomers for that long anymore, and I will maintain his hair cut myself now.

Thank you so much everyone for your kind advice and opinions :D

glad to see he's doing better; maybe he's just cold; put a t-shirt on him; also possibly he might have seperation anxiety; my dog had that; i rotated between rescue remedy drops and homeopet anxiety drops; and sometimes i use sleepytime tonic; they are all made from herbs and safe. good luck

two of my dogs shiver like that sometimes as long as a week after being groomed and I never leave them. I think it is the stress of being groomed and they are extremely nervous dogs. Luckly they only go to the groomers about 3 times a year as I try to groom them myself most of the time

Hello all,

Just another curious question, I wasn't actually thinking of neutering my little Yoshi, but since someone had mentioned to me they live longer when they are neutered I had to consider it.

After being neutered, what should I be expecting? like how will he act? Will he be all shivery like after being groomed?

Will he think I'm doing all these bad things to him and start hating me and start to not trust and love me?
