Microchip & Size I'm pro microchip, but is it okay for a small Yorkie, i.e., 3 to 4 pounds? I'm taking my new pup for his vet check, & would get the chip, but think he's too small at 3.5 pounds. |
Lucy was chipped at 12 weeks old, when she was only around 2lbs - the vet actually said she found it easier with young pups, as they're less usually anxious, and don't wriggle around as much as some dogs with previous experience of the 'big, bad vet'. |
My boy was chipped at the same time his tail was docked.. I may be wrong but that is what I thought I was told.. I will have to check on that. |
Hi...Don't worry..I have just had my Dustie chipped...He is just turned 8 months old..and weighs in at about 3 half pounds...He never flinched at all. I just held him and done in a jiffy...He seems fine and can't feel it anywhere on him..but I know it is in..as the vet scanned his back..!! I was undecided at first..but I had paid for it with the initial puppy pack..so thought I would get him done. I am sure your pup will be fine... Chris. x |
Jack was already microchipped when we got him from our breeder at 14 weeks. He was less than 3 lbs at the time, so it must have been done when he was quite small. I think the needles they use are very thin. |
Because the chip is the size of a grain of rice, many vets prefer to do it while the dog is under anesthesia. |
The micro-chip is the size of a grain of rice, so the needle is actually pretty large. Couver had his done when he got neutered, along with his rabies shot. |

I microchip pups when they get their first shots. The needle is large, and it does hurt for a second. I think it is important to try to protect these babies any way you can. A whole litter of German Shephards was stolen here last spring. They had not been microchipped and the owner had no way to prove that they were the stolen dogs. None were ever recovered. |
I am going to go ahead and have it done. I just scheduled the appointment. I do not put collars on Lacey, so I really can not put this off any longer. |
