Food Question I searched but didn't come up with much of anything, so apologies if you've read/answered this same question somewhere along the line. Since bringing Galahad (1.5-2 y/o) into our home initially on the 27th, he has gone from just under 4 pounds to a full 5 pounds. He's still kind of boney though. He refuses ALL dry dog food, and has from the very start. If I mix it with canned, he will eat the canned food and leave the dry. So we stopped attempting to feed him the dry, and he eats great. He wants to eat a full 5.5 ounce can in the morning and then another full can in the evening. The cans say to feed adult dogs about one can per 6-7 pounds of weight daily. He is getting plenty of water, and treats here and there while we work on training. Do you think he's eating too much just because of the lack of food for who knows how long, while he was on his own, or does he genuinely need this amount at this point in his life? |

Hmmmm...it does seem like a lot of food, but he also sounds underweight. Has he been fully checked out by vet and everything? Like a fecal test and blood work etc? Congrats on your new kiddo, love the name! :) |
Yes, we took him to our vet Monday of last week for a full workup. She said he had obviously been on his own for a while, but that except for his slenderness, he appears to be in perfect health. She said that he just needed "lots of food and love", lol. She said it was no big deal that he refuses dry food, he may start accepting it after a while, but so far, no dice. He looks at me like I'm nuts if I put it in his bowl. |

Yes, she said they did a FFT and bloodwork, that he was neg. for all parasites, no signs of other digestive issues. He has "normal" poos, well formed, not overly squishy, not runny at all, not overly hard. |

Well, hmm, ya know...if it were me and he checked out this well at the vet, and poos were good but he was boney...I think I'd tend to just let him be my guide for now. Guess he has some catching up to do. :) When you say he was "on his own", did you rescue/find him? If so, he is so lucky! Well, he's lucky no matter what actually! |
Yeah, sounds like a good plan. He's the first dog I've rescued and I just want to make sure I'm not overfeeding him or anything lol. I figured he was playing catch up food-wise, but you know how parents are, always second guessing themselves. My first post on the forum is here, with the story of how he came to join our family. :) |
