Hot spot A few weeks ago I took Rocky to the groomer. About week later I noticed a clump of his hair stuck together on his face. As I was bathing him I managed to clean out the majority of the goo.. I had no clue what it was.. I just figured he got food stuck in there. After his bath he was crying uncontrollably. Again not knowing what was going on.. I just figured he was really cold. This past Saturday night I noticed this clump of hair again in the same spot. I took out his bath wipes and tried to clean it off. As I was doing so I noticed under his fur there was a hot spot. I immediately got out some neosporin. It was the scariest thing I've ever seen on my lil guy. Anyhow, around 4 in the morning I noticed that the hot spot enlarged and his fur was starting to come off. I took him to the doggy ER and they shaved his face and gave me antibiotics. Apparently he got nipped from the groomer and I didn't know and the hot spot grew from him scratching the area and infecting it. (The clump of hair was from the pus coming out) Anyhow he is wearing the cone on his head (and not letting me sleep by the way) and he is taking the antibiotics, but it's looking a lil crusty and I wanted to clean it out.. Any suggestions? And should I continue with the neosporin to enhance the healing process? Thank you |
I've never had to deal w/ hotspots on my fellas, but I just wanted to bump this for you...hoping that one of the other members who has dealt with this will see this. I hope your little Rocky is already feeling better. Please keep us posted on his progress. Those hotspots sound just miserable :(. Welcome to YT. :) |
It sounds like he has an infection, not just a hot spot. Since it hasn't cleared up, I'd suggest you call your vet. He may need a different antibiotic to get rid of the infection. |
We had lots of trouble with our English Bulldogs getting hot spots. We put sulphur powder on it as recommended by our vet. Hearts has a liquid sulphur product that is made for hot spots. |
We just started the antibiotics Sunday morning.. It looks like its getting better like it's starting to scab.. but i wanted to clean it a little and I wasn't sure what I can use... This sulphur product I can find in a pet store? What exactly does it do? Thanks for the replies by the way.. I love that there's an avenue where we can find some support during tough times :) |
It is called Sulfodene. First aid skin medication for dogs as an aid ithe th treatment of Hot Spots assoicated with scrapes, itching, hair loss and redness. It is in a clear bottle with Yellow liquid. I bought it at Petco but I think I have seen it in Walmart too. It also stops them from licking it cause it don't taste good I apply it with a ball of cotton. |
