Laci had pancreatitis need food receipe or lowfat food
 

What a very very long weekend, poor Laci was sooo sick with pancreatitis, I was scared to death... not knowing 100% what caused it I am going to switch to a Low fat diet... she has just spend a good couple hours chewing on a new bully stick, then threw up. We were at the vet a couple hours... 500.00 later we still had a horrible weekend she was so sick I felt so bad for her.. Anyways the vet said she thinks it was probally the bully stick and that she " should" be okay on her regular food, INSINCT, way to high in fat so Im not going back to that.. what I need to know is other then boiled chix and rice does anyone have a low fat receipe???
And I would still like a high quality food that has a low fat content.. Instint has 20% crude fat.. to high for her, and I never want that to happen ever again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ON another note, Laci is doing so much better today , she finally ate boiled chix and a little rice!!

Our 3 year old is recovering from a bout with pancreatitis he had about 2 weeks ago. Well, he is over it . . . Yes, it was frightening and this site helped us to learn quite a bit so I am sure others will chime in. In our situation, Pfender had a 663 lipase level (from his blood work). The vet told us to give him very bland food (chicken and rice) for about 10 days, put him on an antibiotic (Baytril) and an antacid. After 10 days we returned for a follow up and thankfully his lipase level was 63. Unfortunately, once having it a Yorkie is susceptible so you ahve to watch his diet keeping it low fat. Plus they are already more inclined to kidney problems so you have to watch the protein amounts. Our vet recommende keeping his diet at about 25% protein/12% fat. We were feeding him Stella & Chewy's raw chicken patties for about a month before this happened. He liked them at first but now he can't keep them down (and they have the percentages we are looking for). So, we have been searching for the right kibble. One tip we received is to feed Senior Formula food which are typically lower in protein and fat. Some of these however seem TOO low in fat for a fairly young dog. Also, it seems that many of these have ingredient lists where the meat product is pretty low on the list.

He likes Greatlife Buffalo but it is at 14% fat; it doesn't seem to far off the 12% mark but we are scared to do it since the fat is what you watch for pancreatitis. Anyway, he didn't like Innova or Merrick. Right now he is eating Lotus Chicken Recipe Senior Formula but again, at 18% protein/8% fat, it seems rather low. So we supplement it with a little chicken breast a few times a week. But, we are still searching for the right food.

Some of the others I have heard are Whole Earth Farms, Solid Gold, and Holistic. Our vet said that its important to find the food they will eat and than stay with it.

Also, Pfender used to love bully sticks and pig's ear but never again. Now we are looking for low fat/lower protein treats, veggie based preferrably.

Layla has pancreatitis- but has never had symptoms- we have been lucky.

Layla is on a home cooked diet- very low fat. I used a nutritionist when making her diet and she is also on a lypase supplement to help her pancreas. I know there ARE quality low fat foods out there- but i'm sorry, since i dont' fed kibble- i don't know what they are.

I'm sure many more members will stop by and be bale to help you out. There are many yorkies on here with pancreatitis.

Would you consider an rx diet?
Natural Balance has a few lower fat foods and Innova Senior might work.

what are the symptoms of pancreatitis?

not ALL dogs with pancreatitis show symptoms- but pretty much throwing up after meals, diarrhea, lethargy- perhaps pain when picking up your dog.

I think those might also be the symptoms of a liver shunt- basically if your dog can't keep her food down and is acting kinda lethargic- best to go to the vet- both can be very serious.

can I ask what you home cook???? I dont mind cooking for her at all!!

I started cooking when the recalls came- I didn't want to just sit and wait for it to be our food to be recalled.

Then when Layla was diagnoised- our vet wanted us to go on canned food which I did not want to do. So i contacted a nutritionist who works with a holistic vet in California Holistic Veterinarian Pet Nutritionist Holistic Pet Care we had a phone consult and she told us what to feed Layla- how much- that kind of thing. Layla is on a lipase supplement that I buy from her website as well as a probioitic. She is also on a multvitamin and a calcium that i get from animalessentials.com

Susan (at ask ariel) is so great and helpful. Many on here have used her. It doesn't matter WHAT nutritionist you use- you just want to make sure you use one to ensure that the meals are balanced.

ava got really sick yesterday and i had to take her to the hospital; she was vomiting a lot and some blood in the vomit; they did blood test and her amylase enzymes was high; her white blood cell counts was low and i believe her platelets was low too; i dont have the papers with me; i will get them today when i pick her up from the hospital. she was diagnosed with pancreatitis because of the amylase high levels. so now i dont know if she has both gastritis and pancreatitis. anyway i spoke to the vet today; ava is on IV fluilds and they will prescribe presciption diet for pancreatitis; i am assuming royal canin which can have meal and by products so i am not sure what to do;
i had ava on the honest kitchen which is a pretty good food; but sometimes when she doesnt eat breakfast i give her baby food; and maybe that's what triggered the pancreatitis.
so what should i do about the RX diet royal canin; what if she doesnt eat it; she's very picky eater. any suggestions?
should i put her on royal canin for a while and then switch her back to the honest kitchen;
or should i give her chicken and rice for a while instead?

I dont have any experience with pancreatis but I have read alot of threads on it. Alot of the people on here that have dealt with it homecook for their yorkies with a recipe given by food nutritionalist Susan Davis. Hopefully one of them sees your post and gives you more info. I know thats the way I would go if faced with that predictament.
