Oily meds for ear infection.... Anybody ever used this greasy, nasty stuff for ear infections on your dog and wondered, how to wash it out? Theses drops made Bailey's entire head look horrible and regular dog shampoo won't do the trick. Thinking about using diluted Dawn dish soap on him. Any comments, suggestions..????? |
haha they do look like grease balls, don't they? Actually, I have been lucky getting it out with Petsilk shampoo. I used to use another shampoo that did not remove it as well. I do, however, wash their heads twice during their bath if they have been on ear drops...maybe that is another reason? |
What kind of infection did yours have? Fergie had ear mites AND a yeast infection in her ear when I brought her home. Luckily only one of the drops made her "greasy" lol |
Mometamax which is commonly used for yeast infections is what makes them get that greasy look. |

There is a Cheap Puppy Shampoo that you can get at WalMart....tearless it's great for getting the grease out........But, you can add a bit of Baking Powder to your shampoo and it'll strip out the grease |

I know I use Panalog....different manufacters, different names, but still Panalog. The baking powder trick was given to me by a hairdresser. I use it to strip all the oils & products off my dogs before a show......leaves the coat squeeky clean.... |

I did some googling last night and found that they are different meds, but very similar. Here is a link: http://www.fda.gov/downloads/AnimalV.../ucm117265.pdf So, you sprinkle it on and brush out? |

my roomates Maltese had ear infections and the medicine turned his face yellow and made him mat together she used a humane shampoo for oily hair and then the high white and he seemed to come clean |
Yep, been there! Before you bathe them, sprinkle a bunch of Corn Starch in all of the areas where they are greasy -- rub it in, be generous w/ it, let it sit there for a couple minutes. Then just bathe as usual. Should get it out. The corn starch "attaches" to the grease - and this in turn gives something for the shampoo and water to "attach" to. Otherwise the greasiness just repels everything and a lot of it is still there after the bath if you don't use the corn starch. |
Thanks everybody! I've been using Otomax but will be asking my vet about Tresaderm if we ever get another ear infection again. Morgan's was bacterial, not yeast based and no ear mites. I ended up using the corn starch in order to get the gunk out of his hair since I had plenty of that available and it worked like a charm! My guess is, baking powder would have worked just as well. I knew, you guys would come up with great suggestions! Thanks sooooo much!:yorkietal |
