Post-neuter question
 

I'll admit...I still haven't gotten JoJo neutered, but thankfully I will this month (he's one year old). It was due to financial reasons and thankfully my finances are back on track now.

My question is this: right now he loves to bolt out the door or car, and I'm terrified one day he'll run off and I'll never see him again. I hear others say that this is sometimes due to boys smelling a girl in heat, and neutering can help. Has anyone had a dog who liked to run off, only to be changed post-neuter? Or am I dreaming here? :p

You are dreaming .... he just want to go out into the big bad world and play. If it were me I would buy a cheap wooden child gate and put it in the door so when you open the door he can't get out.

I'm just jealous sometimes when I take him for a walk and see others' dogs sitting so nicely outside with no desire to run off...even when they see other dogs. Guess my furbutt has an extra 'desire for adventure' gene. :D

He is a terrier and was bred to hunt vermin..so off he will go.:p

Please, please secure JoJo at all times. You mentioned your finances and I want to share a story with you that may help you to understand how important it is to keep him close by and secured.

Take a look at the YHR website and read about Rookie. Rookie's owner told me that he kept darting out the front door of her home and said that she knew it was inevitable that something would happen to him. One day he got hit by a car. She could ill afford the cost to fix his fractured leg.....went bargain shopping for a vet to repair the fracture. Sadly, the vet may have meant well, but the work done on him was not sufficient to fix it and this poor little dog had this fracture for six months. Finally, the owner realized it was not fair to leave him in pain and she surrendered him to rescue since she could not afford proper vet care to fix this fracture that could have been avoided. She freely admitted to me that he got hurt because she did not stop it from occuring!

He had to have a bone graft done two weeks ago, a pin put in and a plate with eight screws. Strict crate rest for the past two weeks...and now for another six weeks. Poor little guy wants to run and play. Yes, in time he will, but look at the price he has paid. To repair his leg properly after all of this, the cost was $2,600!

So....put your pupster on a leash at all times if there is no fence! Even well trained dogs sometimes will bolt. I would never tempt fate like that. Put up gates in your home that prevent him from running out your door.

Do it before it is too late! Please!

I appreciate your taking time to tell me about that story. It is very sad, and I hope that little guy gets better soon. But I just wanted to be clear and mention that JoJo is always on a leash when we go outside. And whenever I open the door, whether it's my house or car, he is securely in my arms before I open it. The gate idea you and livingdustmops mentioned is a good idea though, just to be even safer.

I'm VERY careful with him, but what concerns me is when others who are less careful open a door and there he goes. I tell all my friends and family to be careful, but when it's not their dog, sometimes they don't think...if you know what I mean. :rolleyes:

Yes, I do know what you mean. That is why I have gates where my pups cannot get out any door of my home!

You might want to ask your friends and family to each cough up a $3,000 deposit. That might make them think. OR..they will think you are wacky. :D
