Drinking Excessively My yorkie has started drinking excessively. He was checked for diabetes, urinary track infection, kidney infection, and kidney failure.... all negative. Has anyone experienced this and found out what the cause is? |
If it was none of the things above, maybe he's just really thirsty? Some days Jackson will drink more than others. What food are you feeding him? Higher protein foods cause them to drink more water sometimes. Whenever Jackson eats a bully stick, he comes over and drinks a TON of water. |
Drinking Excessively His diet has not changed. |
How old is he? Cushing's Disease can cause excessive drinking but there are many other symptoms and it usually affects older dogs. The other symptoms my Pom had were excessive hunger, lots of hair loss and skin sores. Maybe he is eating something that is making him hungry. I hope you find out what the cause is. |

Excessive Drinking Sorry, he also tested negative for cushings disease. |
My first thought would be Cushing's but I see that was tested for...how did they rule that out? Was thyroid checked? |
He also also peeing more, right? Does he eat hard food? How many ounces of water does he drink daily? |
Vet had a urine sample and took blood; I am assuming one of these was used for the Cushing disease check. He was not checked for thyroid yet. |
He is peeing more. Having accidents in the house. He eats wet food. Don't know exactly how many ounces he is drinking but I woulde estimate at leat 20 ounces. This is a dog that would NEVER empty his water bowl. |
Diabetes Insipidus? |
Thyroid problem |

For an accurate Cortisol-Creatinine Ratio Urine Test, the urine needs to be caught at home when the dog is relaxed, preferably in the morning....by sucking the urine up into a clean syringe (like, off of a tile floor) - that would be most accurate. Just fyi. Agree - should be checked for Diabetes Insipidius too, definitely! |
what food is he eating; some food might make a dog thirsty and require more water; and wet food is already hydrated so maybe he's just getting too much water. is his pee clear color? |
I caught the urine in a container given to me by the vet at the vets office. |
