Arthritis pain management For the last few years, I've been able to manage the arthritis Alexander has in his hind legs with baby aspirin and glucosamine supplements. Now that he's gotten older, and with colder weather coming, I'm afraid he needs more help. I just started another thread on the warnings of Rimadyl. I'm so afraid to use this medicine. Does anyone use something other than Rimadyl to help with arthritis pain? Any recommendations would be appreciated! |
Is your concern Rimadyl or all NSAIDs? |
All NSAIDS concern me, but as you said on the other thread Rimadyl seems to have a higher reaction rate. I would be willing to consider other NSAIDS, depending on their history and user recommendations. |
How about Metacam? What glucosamine supplement are you using? |
Cosequin. I buy the DS chewables & break them in half. I've been giving him glucosamine for years and it truly does make a difference for him. |
I'm going to do some more reading on Metacam. No warnings popped up when I googled it just now. I want to be more knowledgable about the possible choices when I take him in to see the vet. |
I've been reading about Metacam. It doesn't seem to have as severe of side-effects as Rimadyl. It isn't as strong a pain reliever, either, but it should help Alex's arthritis pain better than baby aspirin. I think this might be a good choice for him. Thanks Crystal! |
I'd stop the aspirin personally. Pain relievers made for animals are a better choice. |
