I use a toothbrush made for cats from the Petrodex Dental Kit (bought it at PetSmart) and use toothpaste for dogs. This toothbrush is the only one I've found to be small enough. Even the little brushes you slip on your finger is too big for his tiny mouth. Prince likes having his teeth brushed now that I have a smaller toothbrush.

I really don't get it. Is there fluoride in dog toothpaste? What exactly is in these sprays?

I am a dental hygienist, and I plan on studying more about a dogs dentition. I would like to scale Eva's teeth myself when needed if she will let me. I know that humans need fluoride and there is no human tartar remover (it can not be softened) so I am really skeptical about these sprays and pastes. I haven't even looked into paste yet. Eva just got the last of her adult teeth.

Eva actually has molars that have erupted with chalky patches on them. It looks like cream colored tartar but is perfectly flat, almost like the enamel is decalcified. I haven't scraped across them yet with an instrument but I am curious if anyone else has seen this before.

There is a brush that we recommend for some patients for cleaning single teeth that is small. It is called a perio brush. The bristles form a very small circle. They are regular length but you could cut them with very sharp scissors then rub the bristles in hot water to soften the edges(do this by vigorously rubbing them for several minutes on your finger under hotwater)
Good human brushes have bristles with polished tips because if they are rough even microscopically, you can do damage to the gums. Dog toothbrushes look really cheap, I doubt they are made with any safety standards in mind. I would at the very least buy a human bush, preferably a baby Oral B. If you can't find a perio brush you could try cutting half the bristles entirely off the baby brush.

I use a really small toothbrush for Belle but she really fights when I try to do the top side teeth. I have bought her several toys that have nubs on them and she chews on them and gets the side teeth really good. she also chews on those string toys that have almost like a dental floss feel, they clean really well between teeth. Just some ideas, I know how they can struggle when they don't want to have anything done to them.:(

Toothpaste is effective b/c of enzymes. Sprays + Gels are also known to be for the same reason, yet I haven't seen any proof from them.

You may be able to skip dentals if you stay on top of their teeth. I'd love to get my yorkie used to your cleaning machine so you could do a dental without sedation.

I guess my question would be, how different is dog tartar than human tartar. If there was a product that softened or removed human tartar it would be the next huge thing and there would be no need for dental cleanings. Truth is, nothing removes human tartar except mechanical scraping. So unless dog tartar is not calcified plaque(which is all human tartar is) I don't see how any of these products do anything but waste peoples money. If they at least had some level of fluoride safe for dog consumption of course then I could see some benefit. Think I will look that up.

i have an 8month old yorkie and she's in heat although this is her 3rd week and its less bleeding. However, for the past 2 nights, she had been peeing while she's sleeping. I have read that too much protein can cause this, is it true? if so it would be my fault because I have been putting chicken along with her dry food. I only started mixing chicken because ever since she was in heat she rarely eat and I was concerned for her. Will this peeing in bed stop since today i decided not to put chicken in her food?

We have two dogs, both about 4.5 pounds and we use a infants toothbrush. The best one we found is Oral B because the head is more round than long and oval. Also, you could use a smaller one by just buying the head of an electronic toothbrush. Bandit already has buildup but isn't horrible with the toothbrush as long as its less than 30 seconds, but the puppy hates it so we're trying to get her used to it now.
