Cutting Nails? Hey there! I just got a new baby girl, and her little nails are sharp! She also gets caught on pretty much everything and I can see she is getting frustrated! Not to mention, Ocho (my 2-year old yorkie) can't stand the sharp nails when they play! Would you recommend cutting her nails? she is only 8 weeks old! I don't know how to go about it...should I take her to a groomer? I feel like she is too small! Any advice that you can offer is great! Thanks so much! :) Ciao, *Ariana* |
I don't like cutting Layla's nails or having anyone else do it because as you know they are black and it is hard to see when you have gone too far- So i use a nail file and you can do that any time- now is good :) I do LAyla's every few days to keep them down. If you start now- she will get used to it and not fight when you try and do it. |
Petsmart will cut them for free, until they are 6 months old. If you choose to cut them. |
I would. You have to get them use to it now or you will have problems down the road. I use to just tip Peanuts with a regular toe nail clipper.. I would just tip the point. I would always play with his feet and paws and stick my finger in his pads, just so he is use to that. The whole thing with the black nails and trimming is scary if you dont know where the "quick" is also if you dont trim them the quick will grow long and it will be hard to trim them.. since she is only 8 weeks old I would just use a nail file and file it down some or take baby finger nail clippers(while she is a baby and little) and just clip the very end. that will help with her getting used to you clipping her toenails in the future. |
I bet one of your vet techs or a groomer would be happy to teach you how to do it. :) It can be scary at first, I know exactly how you feel! |
This is just the right time to start trimming her nails. I always use baby nail clippers, just clipping the tips, and then filing them as needed. I also play with Jasmines feet after cutting her nails each time, this has helped with her grooming. She loves her bath. I know you didn't asked this, but our vet also told us to occasionally take food or treats from Jasmine's mouth, telling her to "give it" so she would never be aggressive when she is eating. This worked with both Jasmine and Prissy very well. They are both very good natured little ladies and a joy to be around. |
She's too young right now, but after she has all her shots, taking her for a walk on pavement and sidewalks will help keep them filed. I am TOTALLY incapable of trimming their nails myself so they get it done when they get groomed, and once in between groomings if they need it. |
If and when you start cutting the nails make sure you have some Quick Stop. You can find it at Petsmart. Its a yellow powder you put on the nail if you cut it too short! |
